  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

THINE IS THE GLORY (#145 LBW)

Thine is the glory

Risen conqu'ring Son
Endless is the vict'ry
Thou over death hast won!
Angels in bright raiment
Rolled the stone away
Kept the folded grave clothes
Where thy body lay
Refrain:
Thine is the glory,
Risen conqu'ring Son
Endless is the vict'ry,
Thou over death hast won!

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh what a fortaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his spirit,
washed in his blood.

refrain:
This is my story,
this is my song,
praising my savior
all the day long:
this is my story,
this is my song,
praising my savior

I THE LORD OF SEA AND SKY

"I the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in deepest sin
my hand will save
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?"
refrain:
Here I am Lord.
Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord,
If you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

"I the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people's pain.
I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.
Whom shall I send?"
(refrain)

"I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?"
(refrain)

The Church’s One Foundation

The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
She is his new creation
By water and the Word.
From heaven he came and sought her
To be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her,
And for her life he died.

Elect from every nation,
Yet one over all the earth;
Her charter of salvation:
One Lord, one faith, one birth.
One holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses
With every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder
This world sees her oppressed,
By schisms rent assunder,
By heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping;
Their cry goes up: "How long?"
ANd soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.

Through toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war
Se waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth has union
With God, the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won.
O blessed heavenly chorus!
Lord, save us by your grace
That we, like saints before us,
May see you face to face.

The Chruch's One Foundation.. I love that hymn too! :)

My favorite hymns are:

Go Tell it on the Mountain

What Child is This?

And a certain Lutheran Kyrie that doesn't really have a name. I'll share it.

"In Peace, In Peace, let us pray to the Lord... have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy..

For the gift above, and for peace throughout the world, for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord... have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy..

For your people here, who have come to give you praise, for the strenghth to live your Word, let us pray to the Lord.. have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy...

Help, save, and defend us, oh God.. Amen.."

I think that Kyrie is beautiful. :)

Right on Puppy!! The Kyrie is great! I forgot how old it is but that is ancient, and ever true! Does your church follow it with the 'Gloria in Excelsis'? I look forward to hearing it every Sunday, with the Pipe Organ blowing it out (vibrating the pews!!) and the whole congregation singing to God praise!

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father:
We worship you, We give you thanks, we praise you for your Glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God: You take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father;
Recieve our Prayer. For you Alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the Glory of God the Father. Amen
That is a great hymn of praise! (so are the Sanctus and the Benedictus qui venit that is the "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Power and Might,....). The thought of singing with all the Angels in heaven, all the saints on earth and above, in an endless hymn; it fills me with awe.

Gloria in Excelsis.. can't say that I've heard of that one. We usually follow it with one of two small hymns:

"Glory to God"
"Now the Feast"

They are both great hymns. :)

Here is another one of my favourites, check out this site!! http://www.cyberhymnal.org/index.htm

O for a thousand tongues to sing
Charles Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

In Christ your Head, you then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

On this glad day the glorious Sun
Of Righteousness arose;
On my benighted soul He shone
And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife,
’Twas then I ceased to grieve;
My second, real, living life
I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord’s atoning blood
Close to my soul applied;
Me, me He loved, the Son of God,
For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true,
Ascertained of my part,
My pardon passed in heaven I knew
When written on my heart.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved through faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of God was slain,
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.

Awake from guilty nature’s sleep,
And Christ shall give you light,
Cast all your sins into the deep,
And wash the Æthiop white.

Harlots and publicans and thieves
In holy triumph join!
Saved is the sinner that believes
From crimes as great as mine.

Murderers and all ye hellish crew
In holy triumph join!
Believe the Savior died for you;
For me the Savior died.

With me, your chief, ye then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

I love so many that have been mentioned already, and the kyries! I love those, I used to dance to them when I was younger. What I really love is "Beneath the Cross of Jesus". A short story, if you've ever seen the band Lost and Found, you may have heard this.

Lost and Found was doing a show and some guy came up to them saying: "you know, our church just started recently and we have so many people and we have a projection system so that everyone can see the words to the music" to which Michael replies: "Well, everyone's got to start somewhere, at my church they have a book for each person with the words to every song right in it!"
Just for all my fellow ELCA people!

Here's a Hymn that most of you won't know.

COME, PRAISE THE HOLY SPIRIT

Come, praise the Holy Spirit!
The prophets he inspired;
They after our salvation
Unceasingly inquired.
They spoke of Christ our Saviour
Of Grace that was to be,
Proclaimed to us the wonders
Which angels long to see.

The Gospel of Salvation
God has to us revealed,
And we, the word believing,
Were with the Spirit sealed.
What none had seen or heard of
Has been to us declared;
What no man had imagined
God has for us prepared.

(This is my fav. verse)
Led by the Holy Spirit,
Our Flesh we crucify;
In Him shall we find freedom,
As unto sin we die.
O Spirit by thy power
Our faithfulness increase.
Reap thus in us they harest
Of love and joy and peace.

When we cry "Abba! Father!"
The Spirit wittness bears
That God made us His children
and we, with Christ, are heirs.
The Spirit, as the firstfruits
Of glorious liberty,
Helps us await with patience
What we do not yet see.

If I tried to name my favorites I think I could compile a whole new hymnal!:) So I'll try to keep it down.

The Church's One Foundation is definately one I could not do without, here is another verse to that one which I think was left off:

"The church shall never perish! Her dear Lord to defend,
To guide, sustain and cherich, Is with her to the end;
Though there b ethose that hate her, And false sons in her pale,
Against or foe or traitor, She ever shall prevail."
____________________________

Here another fav of mine (and to the same tune as The Church's One Foundation):
'Tis not that I did choose thee, For, Lord that could not be;
This Heart would still refuse Thee, Hadst thou not chosen me.
Thou from the sin that stained me Hadst cleansed and set me free;
Of old Thou hast ordained me, That I should live to Thee.

'Twas sov'reing mercy called me, And taught my op'ning mind;
The world had else enthralled me, To heav'nly glories blind.
My heart owns none before Thee, For Thy rich grace I thirst;
This knowing, if I love Thee, Thou must have loved me first.
___________________________

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.

Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, be leaving, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine
Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.

Here's a good evangelical hymn:
Far and near the fields are teeming
With the waves of ripened grain;
Far and near their gold is gleaming
O’er the sunny slope and plain.

Refrain
Lord of harvest, send forth reapers!
Hear us, Lord, to Thee we cry;
Send them now the sheaves to gather
Ere the harvest time pass by.
Send them forth with morn’s first beaming,
Send them in the noontide’s glare;
When the sun’s last rays are gleaming,
Bid them gather everywhere.

Refrain

O thou, whom thy Lord is sending,
Gather now the sheaves of gold;
Heav’nward then at evening wending,
Thou shalt come with joy untold.

Refrain
_____________________________

Whate’er my God ordains is right:
His holy will abideth;
I will be still whate’er He doth;
And follow where He guideth;
He is my God; though dark my road,
He holds me that I shall not fall:
Wherefore to Him I leave it all.
Whate’er my God ordains is right:
He never will deceive me;
He leads me by the proper path:
I know He will not leave me.
I take, content, what He hath sent;
His hand can turn my griefs away,
And patiently I wait His day.

Whate’er my God ordains is right:
He is my Friend and Father;
He suffers naught to do me harm,
Though many storms may gather,
Now I may know both joy and woe,
Some day I shall see clearly
That He hath loved me dearly.
Whate’er my God ordains is right:
Though now this cup, in drinking,
May bitter seem to my faint heart,
I take it, all unshrinking.
My God is true; each morn anew
Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart,
And pain and sorrow shall depart.

Whate’er my God ordains is right:
Here shall my stand be taken;
Though sorrow, need, or death be mine,
Yet I am not forsaken.
My Father’s care is round me there;
He holds me that I shall not fall:
And so to Him I leave it all.
_____________________________

This one is the best for Communion:
Stricken, smitten, and afflicted,
See Him dying on the tree!
’Tis the Christ by man rejected;
Yes, my soul, ’tis He, ’tis He!
’Tis the long expected prophet,
David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;
Proofs I see sufficient of it:
’Tis a true and faithful Word.

Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning,
Was there ever grief like His?
Friends through fear His cause disowning,
Foes insulting his distress:
Many hands were raised to wound Him,
None would interpose to save;
But the deepest stroke that pierced Him
Was the stroke that Justice gave.

Ye who think of sin but lightly,
Nor suppose the evil great,
Here may view its nature rightly,
Here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the Sacrifice appointed!
See Who bears the awful load!
’Tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed,
Son of Man, and Son of God.

Here we have a firm foundation,
Here the refuge of the lost.
Christ the Rock of our salvation,
Christ the Name of which we boast.
Lamb of God for sinners wounded!
Sacrifice to cancel guilt!
None shall ever be confounded
Who on Him their hope have built.
____________________________________

Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Refrain
Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.
Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief,
Kneeling there in deep contrition;
Help my unbelief.

Refrain

Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

Refrain

Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in heav’n but Thee?

Refrain
___________________________
Judge eternal, throned in splendor,
Lord of lords and King of kings,
With Thy living fire of judgment
Purge this land of bitter things;
Solace all its wide dominion
With the healing of Thy wings.

Still the weary folk are pining
For the hour that brings release;
And the city’s crowded clangor
Cries aloud for sin to cease.
And the homesteads and the woodlands
Plead in silence for their peace.

Crown, O God, Thine own endeavor;
Cleave our darkness with Thy sword;
Feed the faint and hungry heathen
With the richness of Thy Word;
Cleanse the body of this nation
Through the Gospel of the Lord.
_______________________________
Here's a few more favs:

This is my Father's World
We Gather Together
We Plough the Fields and Scatter
Come, Ye Thankful People, Come
Revive Us Again
And Can it Be
___________________

Yet if I could only have one it would have to be Holy, Holy, Holy (especially this verse):

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

This one is sung to the tune used for Morning Has Broken

Baptized in Water
Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit
cleansed in the blood of Christ our king;
heirs of salvation, trusting his promise,
faithfully now God's praaise we sing.

Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
dead in the tomb with Christ our king,
one with his rising, freed and forgiven,
thankfully now God's praise we sing.

Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
marked with the sign of Christ our king,
born of the Spirit, we are God's children;
joyfully now God's praise we sing.

I am not a big fan of hymns...I am one of those crazy people who prefer more modern music...but this hymn always brings tears to my eyes and I never can sing the whole thing through!!!

Savior, again to your dear name we raise
With one accord our parting hymn of praise;
Once more we bless you ere our worship cease,
Then, lowly bending, wait your word of peace.

Grant us your peace upon our homeward way;
With you began, with your shall end the day;
Guard all the lips from sin, the hearts from shame,
That in this house have called upon your name.

Grant us your peace, Lord, through the coming night;
For us transform its darkness into light.
Keep us from harm and hanger till the dawn;
Your evening presence promise to your own.

Grant us your peace throughout our earthly life,
Our balm in sorrow and our stay in strife;
Then, when your voice shall bid our conflict cease,
Call us, O Lord, to your eternal peace.

newlamb, I don't know if you still check this thread, but just in case you do, the song you quoted is "My Jesus I Love Thee." It's by William R. Featherstone and Adonirom J. Gordon. It's one of my favorites, too. :)

My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine;
For Thee, all the follies of sin I resign;
My gracious Redeemer, My Savior art Thou;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree;
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I will love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath;
And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow;
"If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now."

In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I'll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright;
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

My other favorite hymns are "Be Thou My Vision" and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." :)

Here's a good one...

A Mighty Fortress, by Martin Luther

1. A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing;
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On Earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God's own choosing;
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us;
The Prince of Darkness grim --
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo, his doom is sure,
On little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth.
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Though Him who with us sideth;
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill;
God's truth abideth still,
His kingdom us forever.

I LOVE THAT HYMN!!! :clap: :clap: :clap: I'm not a protestant anymore but sometimes I just like to blare it on my speakers over my neighbor's techno and grinding death metal. :) It's so beautiful and sweet.

Anyway, here's one of my favorite Orthodox hymns. It's so old that I think forms of it survive in the Catholic and Protestant churches as well. But here's the version we sing at Vespers (a type of non-Eucharistic evening worship service):

O Gladsome Light

Gladsome Light, of the holy glory,
That shines from th'Immortal Father in heaven
The holy, the blessed, O Jesus Christ,
Lo now that we come to sunset,
Now that we see the Evening Light
We sing the praise of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
One God
Worthy art thou to be praised at all times
With voices meet for Holy Song
Son of God,
Thou giver of Life,
Wherefore the world
Glorifieth thee.

Here's the one we sing just before the Holy Eucharist during our Liturgy:

Mystical Supper

Receive me today, O Son of God
As partaker of thy Mystical Supper
For I will not speak,
For I will not speak of thy Mysteries
To Thine enemies
Neither will I give Thee a kiss
As did Judas
But like the Thief will I confess thee,
Remember me, O Lord,
Remember me, O Lord, in thy kingdom.
