I agree with PromiseSeeker - The Joy of Cooking is a must. It's great in teaching basics for ANYTHING. I use it all the time.

I sort of go through phases with cookbooks. I love my Rao's cookbook, and all of my Southern Living Cookbooks. I have a lot of Italian cookbooks that vary by region. On of our favorite is Lydia's Italian Kitchen.

:yum: "Joy of Cooking" is also my standby, it has everything. But I love all cookbooks, the house is full of them. Since I can't afford to buy them new I go to yard sales & buy them, I have every kind except for desserts, I'm a weirdo that does not like desserts.

I collect old cookbooks. I have a huge collection some dating back almost 100 years. I especially love the little booklets that were given away by the manufactures over the years.
As I am from the UK many of you may not be familiar with the brands like Beero or Stork but they usually have wonderful recipes and sometimes even fantastic old pictures.
I love the way the recipes are not standardised. It might say
'use a quarter of a good pinch of mixed spice'
and of course ovens were usually by the open fire and there was no thermostat or regulo so it would always go in a 'warm oven', or a 'moderately hot oven' can you imagine how many mistakes a young cook would make before she got the hang of it!

We have a couple... my sister gave me "Help My Apartment Has a Kitchen" for my high school graduation... it's awesome...
Also have a cookbook my MIL gave me (the rest of the women of the family) for Christmas which is a compilation of tons of recipes from people at our church... very cool.
My mom has a REALLY old copy of Joy of Cooking which she uses a lot. I think she also had/has one called something like Cooking for Two or something... I dunno... I'm an only child and my dad didn't really eat alot, so mom could make recipes from there and it would serve all three of us. Now she's alone since I moved out/got married and dad died, but she has friends over frequently and still uses it (I think it's falling apart 'cuz she uses it so much)...
MIL has TONS of cookbooks... she's got at least 3 Rachel Ray books (one of which DH & I gave her for Christmas) and I think Ladies' Home Journal or Better Homes & Garden cookbooks (I can't remember which)... she's got a whole cabinet filled with 'em LOL

I like my
"How to be a Domestic Godess" by Nigella Lawson
"Common Sense Cookbook" - standard has everything in it cookbook - australian
"The Cook's Companion" - Stephanie Alexander. Consider this - a cook book where you can look up any ingredient you can think of, and then find what to do with it, how to store it, common ways to cook it, and then a load of really nice recipes, as well as simple ways of using it, and an extensive list of what goes well with it. Check out this site http://www.stephaniealexander.com.au/mybooks.htm to find out about it. Probably the best cookbook I have ever come across.

I have never heard of the Joy of Cooking. Who wrote it?

The Joy of Cooking, first edition was first published in 1931, since then many new editions have been published... obviously not by the same authors ( they'd be incredibly old by now, I'd expect) But I understand it is a family effort, the next generation taking over where the last left off ( now in the third generation).
My edition was written by Irma S. Rombauer and daughter Marion Rombauer Becker, but it is not the latest. I belive the newest edition is written by son Ethan Becker, but I could be wrong.
