Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words. - Francis of Assisi
Hi Jo, I always LOVED that quote. I remember reading it and thinking "so all I need to do is be nice to people then"? As the people-pleaser that I am, that thought was literally music to my ears, because it didn't take me very long (after I became a Christian) to figure out that witnessing to others is hardly the way to win a popularity contest, especially when you tell people both sides of the story, 1. the Good News about the Savior and then 2. the bad news about why we need Him.
The problem is, I knew what the Bible said about the necessity of both hearing and believing to receive eternal life and be saved, including things like, "
Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" .. Romans 10:17 (e.g.
John 5:24).
I also knew a bit of church history, and what St. Francis was most known for was, in fact, preaching. He was an itinerant preacher/evangelist, going from town to town, day after day, preaching the Gospel to as many as possible (and in the case of St. Francis, also preaching to cows and horses, etc., as he went along because, apparently, he took what is said in
Mark 16:15 VERY literally), so something seemed off to me (about the quote) for several reasons.
Then I came upon the following article, and it cleared things up a bit for me. It, and other articles that I found later (about the same quote), said that the quote was a fake, that Francis NEVER said that, or anything like it!
If you'd care to read it, the (short) article (from a publication called,
The National Catholic Register) can be found here:
What St. Francis of Assisi Didn’t Actually Say (I was fascinated to read the ending of the article, as well, because it talked about a new evangelism happening in the Roman Catholic Church, a church which is hardly known for witnessing the Good News to others .. in recent times anyway).
Those who justify what the quote says most often do so by saying that all it means is that we are supposed to "act" like Christians too (which, while true, of course, goes without saying). Sadly, that's not what the quote actually says or encourages us to do. As such, I believe that it can be a real stumbling block for many Christians, especially for people-pleasers like me (who wish what it said was true).
The Bible tells us that, "
love .. rejoices with the truth" ..
1 Corinthians 13:6, and that we are to, "s
peak the truth, in love" ..
Ephesians 4:15, but speak we must, yes!
God bless you!!

p.s. - theologian Ligon Duncan said this in response to the quote,
"Saying, 'preach the Gospel daily, if necessary, use words' is like saying 'feed the hungry daily, if necessary, use food'"
