Not sure where to put this, so putting here for now.

Some of my favorite comments. Will add with time. Feel free to do the same.

I have never met a person that I could despair of, or lose all hope for, after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God. - Oswald Chambers

The truth is given to set people free, not to find fault. We need to exercise great caution. - Watchmen Nee

I want to know God, all the rest is details. - Albert Einstein

Great thread topic, @Jo555 :) I'll start with some of the quotes that I've used here in the past (in this case they'll all be about suffering as a believer).

"I've learned to kiss the waves that throw me up against the Rock of Ages" - Charles H. Spurgeon
"The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances" - Elisabeth Elliot
"Two words will help you cope when you run low on hope, accept and trust" - Chuck Swindoll
"Instead of a river, God often gives us a brook, which may be running today and dried up tomorrow.
Why? To teach us not to rest in our blessings, but in the Blesser Himself" - Arthur W. Pink

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - here's another quote (from missionary and author, Elisabeth Elliot) that I just remembered.

"Our vision is so limited we can hardly imagine a love that does not show itself in protection from suffering.... The love of God did not protect His own Son.... He will not necessarily protect us - not from anything it takes to make us like His Son. A lot of hammering and chiseling and purifying by fire will have to go into the process." ~Elisabeth Elliot

Love the additions by all. You may enjoy this one by Joyce. Wonderful lady. We actually wrote back and forth a few times when she was still with us. She sent me a few of her books for free for my own use and so that I could share with others. They always made me cry. Talk about a wounded healer ...

From "My Blue Blanket"
When we are in terrible pain and cry out to others, some people, even some professionals (counselors, pastors, doctors) are not yet wounded healers. They may be someday, but as of now they haven't walked through their own valley of suffering or loss, and God has not yet called them to the wounding place. So they listen to us as we describe the pain, but their first words sometimes are brittle, "learned behavior" responses. They utter words which sometimes come from ignorance of pain or a denial of their pain or out of someone else's training or teaching. But, definitely, their response is not out of their own valley of suffering. Their words do not touch us with comfort and healing. It's as if we are listening to an executive giving a medical lecture in an office conference room rather than watching a doctor binding up wounds in a hospital.

The effective, called-of-god wounded healers speak to the hurting with real words, because they are very sensitive and well acquainted with their own pain...

-Joyce Landorf Heatherly ("My Blue Blanket" excerpt)

Lord, Make Me An Instrument of Peace

Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love:
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words. - Francis of Assisi?

-------------------

We should not take that quote as meaning not to preach the gospel as we feel compelled of God, but to live out what we preach.

Here's an article that elaborates more:

Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words. - Francis of Assisi
Hi Jo, I always LOVED that quote. I remember reading it and thinking "so all I need to do is be nice to people then"? As the people-pleaser that I am, that thought was literally music to my ears, because it didn't take me very long (after I became a Christian) to figure out that witnessing to others is hardly the way to win a popularity contest, especially when you tell people both sides of the story, 1. the Good News about the Savior and then 2. the bad news about why we need Him.

The problem is, I knew what the Bible said about the necessity of both hearing and believing to receive eternal life and be saved, including things like, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" .. Romans 10:17 (e.g. John 5:24).

I also knew a bit of church history, and what St. Francis was most known for was, in fact, preaching. He was an itinerant preacher/evangelist, going from town to town, day after day, preaching the Gospel to as many as possible (and in the case of St. Francis, also preaching to cows and horses, etc., as he went along because, apparently, he took what is said in Mark 16:15 VERY literally), so something seemed off to me (about the quote) for several reasons.

Then I came upon the following article, and it cleared things up a bit for me. It, and other articles that I found later (about the same quote), said that the quote was a fake, that Francis NEVER said that, or anything like it!

If you'd care to read it, the (short) article (from a publication called, The National Catholic Register) can be found here: What St. Francis of Assisi Didn’t Actually Say (I was fascinated to read the ending of the article, as well, because it talked about a new evangelism happening in the Roman Catholic Church, a church which is hardly known for witnessing the Good News to others .. in recent times anyway).

Those who justify what the quote says most often do so by saying that all it means is that we are supposed to "act" like Christians too (which, while true, of course, goes without saying). Sadly, that's not what the quote actually says or encourages us to do. As such, I believe that it can be a real stumbling block for many Christians, especially for people-pleasers like me (who wish what it said was true).

The Bible tells us that, "love .. rejoices with the truth" .. 1 Corinthians 13:6, and that we are to, "speak the truth, in love" .. Ephesians 4:15, but speak we must, yes!

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - theologian Ligon Duncan said this in response to the quote,

"Saying, 'preach the Gospel daily, if necessary, use words' is like saying 'feed the hungry daily, if necessary, use food'" ;)

Thanks David. Just passing by now as busy, but I'll come back later to read the article.

Just an fyi, I had similar concerns with posting that one as the bible clearly says faith comes by hearing the Word, but figured others would take it as I did, to live out your faith at all times, not a call not to preach.

Since we both had concerns, I'll be back later to make a comment under it.

Thank you.

Done, along with a link to the article. Took your words as confirmation to some minor concerns I had on posting it, but put it aside as was thinking it probably is just me

Thanks again.

The vision needs time to grow.
-Arab leader during the Arab Spring.

I would also say that sometimes we are given the vision, but time can still be needed for us to grow within to properly carry out the vision.

That may be what he meant.
