I'm going to be going through the book of Isaiah soon and I was wondering what everyone's favorite commentary for this book was. I'm, also, having difficulties finding out which commentaries on Isaiah hold to dispensational ideas. Thanks.

The best commentary on Isaiah is the one by William Kelly, a writer of the nineteenth century. He wrote commentaries on all the Biblical books of prophecy, and his perception was so great that he detected things happening today more accurately than any modern writer.

Two examples are that on the basis of Daniel 11:43, he said that from that we know that there will be a great collection of gold and silver somewhere in the middle east before that time.

And concerning the vessels in Isaiah 18:2 which the "swift messengers" will use to cross the sea, he observed that this was a very strange word, used in this way nowhere else in scripture. It is obviously some kind of a vessel, but it is definitely not a boat.

So sometime near the year 1850 he saw that the scriptures indicated the current wealth of Saudi Arabia, and picked up the fact that the end time messengers would cross the sea in vessels that would not be boats.

His writings can be found in many large libraries, and reprints can be purchased from Bible Truth Publishers, 59 Industrial Road, Addison, IL.

I also made many comments on Isaiah in my book, "Keys to Bible Prophecy," which is out of print. But I will send a pdf copy to anyone who wants is and gives me an e-mail address.

Know of anything decent printed in the last 40 years?

Nothing that even compares in quality (or in correspondence to actual current events) to the ones I mentioned.

Biblewriter, are you mid-acts?
I am Acts 2, but am not hard core about it. I do not believe there is any deep significance in exactly when the church began.

I love the book of Isaiah; if you have Hebrew I would recommend Hans Wildberger's commentary on Isaiah 1-39 (here). I would also commend Shalom Paul's commentary on Isaiah 40-66 (here).

If you can't read Hebrew then I would suggest the following:

Isaiah 1-39 by Christopher R. Seitz
Isaiah 40-66 by Paul D. Hanson

If you can get hold of Ronald E Clements' commentary on Isaiah 1-39 that is priceless!

A thought; I'm of the Acts 9 Perspective - that it began with Paul's salavation, for example:

1 Timothy 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsufferinf, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

The issue for us is not so much when it began as about what God's purpose had been in its creation, which effects what it's role is and how that role is to be lived out unto His glory, and that is effected by where one believes it began.

In Acts 18, the account of what Apollos understood as to where things were time-wise, is an example of such an impact, thus why he is depicted as having been in need of being brought up to speed as to what was what where.

I would suggest Old Testament Survey by Dr. Paul Benware. Excellent book all the way around with a nice part on Isiah. I would also suggest Understanding End Time Prophecies as Isiah is speaking with end times in mind. You might also want to consider Dr. Constable's exposition of Isiah which is free at here. Just so you know, Dr. Constable is a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. The above will take you to his commentaries on ALL books of the Bible. Happy reading.
