This whole thing is a bit difficult. I'm definitely a Mozart fan over anything else. There is a slight problem with this, though -- he composed so much and half of the compositions are names I can't remember (probably over that!). I tend to like violin a lot, if that helps. Heifetz is amazing!

Mine are probably - depending on my mood - either Beethoven's 9th or Stravinky's Sacre du Printemps. Although it's really hard deciding between all the great flavours.
Wasn't Rite of Spring written for ballet? I am a noob, but might have thought that would make it best appreciated at a theatre rather than as pure music. BTW I like the original choreography (ballet nooby though, only seen 4, 2 on youtube).

I've a preference for Sibelius and Wagner, but I'd have to say my favorite (at the time) would be Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem. Definitely mood music!
I listened to my first Sibelius last night, 6th symphony IIRC. Was impressed! I thought that is was very inventive and original after becoming accustomed to the more melodius (but sometimes a bit sickly sweet) likes of Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart.

I dont want to insinuate anything, but I simply heard that Wagner often appeals to obsessive types. Is that official?

Hmm, I was once in a local library checking our music C.D.'s and I saw this strange looking woman sitting in the seating area listening to some pretty deep Wagner music. Her eyes were nearly popping out of her head and she looked at the music speaker as if she couldn't take her eyes off it. Weird. She never looked at anything else the whole time I was there.

Then again, the library was right next door to the state mental hospital...so maybe...^_^

Nah, it works perfectly for just the orchestra!
Actually it frequently performed as concert without the ballet.
Best thing for stress relief is to lock yourself in and listen to the Sacre as loud as you dare. :D

Also among my favoured pieces:
- Ralph Vaughn-Williams : The Lark Ascending (perfect as a soothing follow-up for the Sacre)
- Bela Bartok : Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta

Quite a tough question...typically it's whatever I happen to be playing at the time, but a few standouts: Sibelius's Violin Concerto (really anything he composed)...Ysaye's Solo Sonata 2...Elgar's VC...(I play violin, so I'm a little biased in all my selections)...Rimsky-Korsakov: Russian Easter Festival Overture...

I also have a violin bias. There is so much out there, that favorites change often. The current list: Barber's "Adagio for Strings," V. Williams' "The Lark Ascending," any of the big VC's (Mendelssohn, Bruch, Sebelius, Tchaikovsky, etc), and, though not violin-specific, anything by Grieg (so there'a a Scandinavian bias, too).
