  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I primarily use the NKJV for everyday reading, but if I am studying a passage, I like to use several different versions and study Bibles, including The Orthodox Study Bible (NKJV for NT, a new translation of the OT, I believe), The International Inductive Study Bible (which uses the NASB version), and the Catholic Study Bible (which uses the NABRE), and read the passage with the NIV (1984 edition) and the NRSV. I find it helps me get different perspectives, ideas and interpretations to work and pray through.

If you mean favorite translation, I would say the NASB 1995 revision. However the ESV is a really solid choice. If you mean version as in Study Bible, I still really like the ESV Study Bible.

Young's Literal translation.
OK, it's a difficult read, but when you want to try and avoid the incorrect (IMO) English renderings of certain words that lead to improper translation, it can't be beat.

I am a KJV man through and through. My favorite individual Bible is a small "pocket" KJV (although it cannot fit in my pocket) with a clasp that I got as a high school graduation present from an old pastor of mine from when I was a little kid.

King James didn't the write the thing...so I don't see why that matters.

It's actually pretty interesting how it came about, but I won't bore you. Some colorful characters on that translation team (not colorful in the James sense.. lol.. I mean, there was a swashbuckler type, for one). The scholars back then seemed to know a lot about the world (and language) in general.

Most Christians want a Bible they can understand and is easy to read, so it remains a choice for any seekers. I was saved many years ago when I opened my KJV New Testament while in the military and I just happened upon John 14. I praise the Lord for that as it really spoke to me about my God who I already was interested in understanding. I found the Savior there and received Him into my heart. I have rejoiced ever since.

Over time I was led to review the Old Scofield Edition of the KJV, and have been much impressed with it for 51 years now. The value of this edition for me is that we know that man is not perfect and all writers will fail in some words (and some men actually work to change wording to please all readers --not a good thing). Trying to simplify God's Word is a risky thing, so I must trust Bible scholars.

The few errors in the KJV are addressed in my Scofield study Bible in comparisons and commentaries on certain words; and the KJV main text is not changed. It has proved a very good study book to better understand the mind of God. Well, to each his own!

I'd have to say my favorite is the Christian Standard Bible, though I do wish they'd stuck with the traditional Psalm 23 and Lord's Prayer. They didn't make huge changes, but it still bothers me. The rest of it is very easy to read, yet more accurate than stuff like the NIV and NLT.
