I will grant you that I know much less about this genre than you do blackwasp, but my favorite is probably "The Day I Tried to Live" by Soundgarden.
Good song...Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are both awesome cds by Soundgarden. In my opinion, Chris Cornell has one of the greatest rock voices of all time. Have you heard "Fell on Black Days"? Beautiful tune -- deep lyrics.

Yes I have, and I agree with you about Cornell's voice. It's brilliant.

Alternative is a stupid classification but if you are going to use it, REM, U2, The Replacements, Husker Du, The Police, Patti Smith, The Cure, Talking Heads ect fit into the category. The Seattle movement minus Nirvana was mostly sophisticated hard rock/ heavy metal.

Wow, you've got some pretty good taste in music IMO ;) , nice picks. Why the dis on Nirvana though? I always liked them.

Nirvana was just a punk band. There was nothing worth listening to on Bleach. The only reason they became popular was because of Nevermind, which wasn't released until 1991. Alice in Chains already had Facelift out in 1990, which had a true grunge hit "Man in the Box". Nirvana wasn't horrible, but their best material was from In Utero, which was 1994? Very punk in their roots, I'd say one of the least progressive of the Seattle bands.

I'll give ya that Nirvana was probably overrated. From the backlash of that, though, I think they have become underrated. Granted they have roots in punk, but what's wrong with that? Really, Nirvana took a good movement (grunge) and mixed it with a more accessible genre (punk) to appeal to the masses. Sort of a Beatles for the 90s eh?

Hmm...idk. I think Kurt regretted recording Nevermind, which brought Nirvana to the masses.

I don't think there is much of a comparison between Nirvana and the Beatles. The Beatles were completely groundbreaking. They didn't take a movement and add their twist -- they started the movement! In addition, the Beatles were always about expanding their sound and trying new things, Nirvana was about stripping music down to power chords.

Hahaha well we can argue this one in the Beatles thread I reckon ;)

Would Evanescence count as alternative? I don't know how to classify them, I just know that I love them to death. :)
Umm, I would classify them as hard rock, but you can classify them as alternative. ;) What's your fav. song by them?
