To be fair, the inns in Baldur's Gate 2 that served as focal points for the adventure were in the minority. There are dozens of inns in the Baldur's Gate series, but only a handful are packed with NPCs ready to throw out quests. Many have a meaningful encounter or two within, but some are simply an innkeeper and some peasants.
Agreed. The Elder Scrolls RPGs are different in that they try to mimic real life as much as possible. That being said, you do have dungeon crawls and head back to town to dump off your 1337 13w7 (ala Diablo and BG). However, there are many places you can do said dumping. You can buy a house, use guild storage, stay at an inn and just lug everything around....
They give you lots of choices. Whether you powergame or actually attempt to role-play is up to you.
