To be fair, the inns in Baldur's Gate 2 that served as focal points for the adventure were in the minority. There are dozens of inns in the Baldur's Gate series, but only a handful are packed with NPCs ready to throw out quests. Many have a meaningful encounter or two within, but some are simply an innkeeper and some peasants.

Agreed. The Elder Scrolls RPGs are different in that they try to mimic real life as much as possible. That being said, you do have dungeon crawls and head back to town to dump off your 1337 13w7 (ala Diablo and BG). However, there are many places you can do said dumping. You can buy a house, use guild storage, stay at an inn and just lug everything around....

They give you lots of choices. Whether you powergame or actually attempt to role-play is up to you.

I'm a big RPG fan, but largely for table-top RPGs, such as D&D, Paranoia, and Changeling. I like the personal touch of people sitting around together talking, and being able to make it up as you go along (I don't LARP though). If I had to pick a console game it would probably be Oblivion, but I don't play many. I also like DDR but that's almost it's own category.

It stands for Live Action Role-Playing. Participants in a LARP usually dress up as the characters they are portraying and act in-character for the duration of the game. They often-times have a negative stigma attached as the majority of LARPs are based on White Wolf games, and are notorious for attracting the stereotypical goth-nerds. I have played in a long-running LARP based on a Japanese feudal setting with fantasy elements (Legend of the Five Rings), and it's probably the most fun I've ever had in terms of role-playing games.

that makes sence. yeah I hear of that, isn't that what got people all worried about D&D cause a whole bunch of people were getting to gether and it was getting very cultish. I even heard some people got hurt cause certian people lost it and started believing it was real.

I think it had something to do with steam tunnels and suicides of a couple LARPers in like 1980(like the demographic LARP appeals to are suicide free otherwise). The cultish aspect was read into it by outsiders. I mean really, people who meet regulary and pretend to be things like "Guildistern the Wolf Slayer" are bound to be thought off their rockers by some. Throw in the whole magic thing and a couple suicides and poof, insta-satanitc cult driving people to suicide.

No, not really.

You've been listening to urban legends, most likely in reference to the Egbert story.

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dallas_Egbert_III#Egbert_incident

ok i'll believe you guys for the most part, but there were some who did blur that line between real and fantasy, but that is just a few and not wide spread. still I think the whole going to a field some where and acting out RPGs like D&D is a little strange. alwell not my problem.

I agree, for the most part. Boffer swords and battle cries are a little weird, but a game that lends itself to a largely political atmosphere can be handled pretty elegantly with a LARP-style game.

I've larp'd a few times in my life. In fact, my university campus was made into a "Shire" by an Amtgard club. It's nothing to have to jump out of the way of foam swords on your way to classes. I graduated, but people still do it. As for larp or things like Dungeons and Dragons, I personally believe that so long as you can mentally seperate reality from fantasy, it's perfectly fine to play such games.

I agree that LARP is a little strange. However, to be blunt, it's comments like yours that cause a lot of the problems for the non-LARPers. D&D is NOT a "go to a field and act it out" game. In fact, as far as I know, there is not a single rule anywhere in any official D&D book telling you how to do that. I know White Wolf games have a very small section that say "You could live action this, but that's not how it's intended to be played. But if you decide to anyway, don't forget, it's only a game."

Though the one thing I find kind of odd about some people's comments is this. Why is it that people who go out and pretend to be wizards and warriors and dress up and have fun are "geeks" and "losers" and "strange", but the moment they get paid to do it, they become "actors" and "hotties" and "cool"? I mean, there are people who would shun LARPers as social outcasts yet turn around and dress up as something just for free candy. Me? It'd rpobably be possible to convince me to LARP if all my friends were doing it, and it looked like it'd be fun. I'd be in a musical or a movie if I thought I had enough talent. And if my friends were going out for halloween, I'd join them in a second for free candy. That's why I feel I'm justified to be irritated at the people who would call a guy who dresses up like an elf for a game a loser, yet call Orlando Bloom a hottie.

Wow, that was a long rant. Much longer than I intended. Oh well.

Well said. There can be the few odd people out there that become obsessed and blur the distinctions, but they are ridiculously few and far between.

I know what you are saying Whirlwind, and i agree with you and willard as long as you can keep the line of real and fake clear it is fine. I am just saying that I (just me) think that is a little strange. I NEVER said that it was wrong or bad or "evil" and I am willing to admit that I had bad info about the whole LARP thing. I have nothing against people who would do this and I wouldn't call them nerds or anything like that. I think doing that and a play is LITTLE different but that is just ME. So please don't take my comments the wrong way. And thank you and the others who posted before for clearing up some of my thoughts on the matter.

I know what you mean. And I'm not saying that LARPing and being in a movie are at all the same, it's just the vastly different steriotypes between two similar things that drives me crazy. And like I said, I think LARPing is a little weird too. :p

Well, on the topic of new things to rant about, I'm hoping to get some new games here soon.

I'll be getting Dance Dance Revolution Supernova on Monday... I'm a big fan of the DDR concept, even if I can only do the dances on light at the most.

I've put in a request for Never Winter Knights II for my birthday, and I can't wait for Star Trek Legacy to come out... it will have all five captains on it. ^_^ (I know, I know, I'm a total nerd.)

Other than that, I can't wait for a new Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon to come out, hopefully a Harvest Moon that isn't a poorly done port of a Gamecube version... Ever since my Gamecube got fried by lightning, I haven't been able to have a good addiction to farming. I don't know what it is about that game, but I get so addicted to them without meaning to.
