so funny reading this when all these "aussie" things aren't really aussie at all!
liek pavlova - that's a NZ invention
and fish and chips? DEFINATELY english, as is the roast dinner with veggies (though you need to make yorkshire puddings to make it a real roast) as is "bangers & mash" and "bubble & squeek"

I think the only TRUELY aussie thing is the good ole' vegemite - and the tim tams...then then there's cherrie ripes...... bbq shapes....mmmmm

Wow this is an interesting thread. I have a friend from Oz and she has never told me about all of these delicacies! I will definately need to run them by her. BYW, what is Vegemite, is it like Mayo here in the States, I know its a sandwich spread but what is the base?

Vegemite is no mayo OneOfHisOwn!! It's a dark brown spread that is meant to be spread thinly on your bread - and I mean REALLY THIN, there is a lot of flavour in even the tiniest amount. It's a yeast extract so its flavour isvery salty. It's not my favourite condiment but many an Aussie has grown up on the stuff, as you have probably heard! I was once told to spread it like nutella, nice and thick. After nearly choking to death I decked that person :D ok just kidding...

what kind of aussie food would you recommend to someoen who came from overseas.

Ah crikey,

Awright me ol' cobbers, lessee what we got in the larder, eh?

For brekky: Lemongrass tea together with a bit of Marmite on Kibble Rye bread and some bunya fruits with a schooner of VB and some buyips milk for the little diggers.

Lunch: Koala meat pie with some tomato sauce, poached emu eggs, and a schooner of VB.

Dinner: rice with pickled witchetty grubs, steamed file snakes, fried goanna, passionfruit with pavlova and some nice tea from the billy - and a schooner of Crown lager.

Note: Roast lamb and Fosters are just too predictable. I prefer to leave the latter to the Kiwi (NZ) cannibals to serve up.

For those who want more Westernised food, then anything manufactured by Sanitarium and Dick Smith Foods is giving our grass roots Aussie producers a fair go, eh?!

cyaz,
