If someone could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. I have to find out who is considered the "father of moral theology" from a Catholic perspective (not the father of modern moral theology, Bernard Haring) for my moral theology class. My teacher hinted that the person's first name begins with the letter A (It's not Augustine or Aquinas) and that this person was a saint alive around the 1500's or 1600's.

Are you aware of the Catholic Encyclopedia online? You probably should bookmark it. Here is its article on moral theology: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14601a.htm

I'm guessing if your teacher says it's not Aquinas, he might have Alphonsus (who is also mentioned in the article) in mind. However I didn't spend much time on the article & can't tell which Alphonsus the article refers to.

Besides Augustine and Aquinas, several other prominent theologians have names beginning with A: Ambrose, Anselm, Abelard, to name a few of the more prominent in the West.

Your teacher is talking about St. Alphonsus Liguori, born 1696 and died 1787.
