How long do you fast and how often?
After Promise Keepers rally, where the subject of Christians being commanded to fast, I started. Before that, I thought it was something that only the zealots were doing, now I understand it to be that ALL are to fast, when seeking a closer communion with God.

I have done a few since the PK rally, most a day, once 4 days when I really wanted some blessings over upcoming issues.

I think that a one day fast is not that impressive, sure it is deprevation, but the hunger pangs don't really kick in until the second day, and that third and fourth day really was hard, but I felt it was really making the fast meaningful.

Well here's a link to the calendar we follow. http://www.goarch.org/en/chapel/calendar.asp

I myself go by that calendar completely. Actually starting on the 14 of this month, there will be a 40 day fast until the Holy Nativity. But as you can see by the calendar, the food we abstain from changes every few days.

Yeah a lot of us do that, however you can only go so far with no food until you are in risk of dying. If you fast for 40 days with no food, and then eat something like a hot dog, you have a good chance of dying. You have to go through a very delicate re-feeding process. That's what stops me from eating absolutely nothing for let's say 40 days.

Plus, fasting rarely means to abstain from all food.:)

Takes about 100 days for someone to starve to death. Some die quicker but in most that have gone to complete death, that is the normal time to death.

Most, with any blubber, can do a 40 day fast with liquids.

Those suing McDonalds for obisity, want to fast for the duration till the case is decided. That will take YEARS, but from the looks of those plaintiff's, they will have no trouble whatsoever...grin.

Hey, those fast till after the sun goes down type Ramadan fasts, are not fasting whatsoever, they merely make the meal at the late night supper more enjoyable.

Fasting should be DEPRIVATION, the real thing, your stomach should be complaining, IMHO....

Well it's the re-feeding where the true danger comes in. You're right about Ramadan. I mean they do get to stuff their faces when the sun goes down. However most Muslims I know, do end up losing their gut from that month.

Ramadan is a total JOKE.

Go to the net, search on the keyword RAMADAN TENT, and take a looksee.

Ramadan is a month of total and complete gluttony now, they dance, eat, and drink from sundown to morning.

It is NOT even treated like fasting anymore, go look for yourself, see the number of HOTELS and RESTURANTS advertising massive food fests.

I am thinking about doing next week Tuesday and Wednesday. This would be all food and liquid. This would also include TV, and Xbox. I would spend my time reading the bible.
Make sure the CF site is included, more than food, being here is addictive and BAD BAD BAD!!! Giving up CF is more of a fast than skipping a few meals, would be for me. :prayer:

What are your thoughts on fasting?

Thanks!

colossi3:

"WHy have we fasted, say, and you do not see? Why have we afflicted our souls, and you take no knowledge? Behold - in the day of your fast you find pleasure and exact [payment -reward?] for all yur labor. [effort]
[Thus] You fast for strife and debate , and to smite with the fist of wickedness: you shall not fast as you do this day to make your voice to be heard on high.
"Is it such a fast as I have chosen?" Please read the rest in Isa 58.
God's peace -

Good read. Make sure you are fasting for the right reasons correct?

-------------------

colossi3: I'm not sure. Somewhere Jesus said it should not be appearent to others that one is fasting. So fast is between man and his God; it should not in any way glorify one who fasts. As you saw in Isa 58, it's not abstinence from food as we think of it, and I definitely get the impression that all fasting is of God: he chooses the time and the reason. [as in : Is this (what we do) the fast I (God) have chosen?
Jesus was led of the spirit into the wilderness. It was of the Spirit that Jesus was to fast, not of his own human decision. It is a deprivation and leaves one weak: then the temptations come. So I tend to believe that fasting is inclusive of trials, a test of faith. I have pondered fasting time and again and can't say I have any special revelation about it.

You would still be drinking water though, right?

I've never tried fasting, atleast not on purpose. I think about trying it, but my body sure does not like it when I go the day without atleast a snack. So if I do, I'll have to make sure it's a weekend.
