  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So I've recently been going through some personal problem and of course I've been praying for God t ok pull me through. Now I decided to try fasting until the problem is solved, fasting isn't something I've tried before but giving up food for God seems like a good way of showing my faith in God. But it's been a couple of days now and the problem hasn't been solved, I know God will pull me through but going without food is going to start being a problem sense my job requires physical labor, but I feEl like if I stop fasting it would be like breaking a promise to God. I could use some advice please.

Does what you are praying about involve others being
moved to your will? Are you eating and drinking anything?
I am drinking water and gatorade when at work. And no I'm not trying to move someone to my will. I'm not comfortable saying what it is, but it is personal thing.

Fasting does not necessarily need to be from food, so you can fast from anything if it will help you to keep your focus on God. It's not always good to fast from food in every situation, so you should consider whether there is anything else you can give up that would be a suitable replacement.

Probably a bit late but I believe that even though breaking a vow is a sin, a vow made out of foolishness can be withdrawn as long as you take the necessary steps to repent and to be wiser in the future

"(Lev 5:4-5)(NASB) says, "or if a person swears (makes a vow) thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, in whatever matter a man may speak thoughtlessly with an oath, and it is hidden from him (he doesn't realize it), and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty in one of these. (5) So it shall be that when he becomes guilty in one of these, that he shall confess that in which he has sinned." The following verses go on to describe the sacrifices that had to be made in addition to the confession. (Verse 10) then says, "So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin which he has committed, and it will be forgiven him." It should be noted here that the High Priest in the Old Testament pointed to Jesus who is now our High Priest and who has made atonement for our sins through His shed blood on the cross (See: Forgiveness ONLY Through The Blood Of Jesus)"

Also in certain verses Jesus discourages making vows to god altogether:

James 5:12: But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

Matthew 5:33-37: “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Also as stated by the user above you should think about if you are asking or provoking God before doing something as trying to force God's hand is highly discouraged to say the least.

...fasting isn't something I've tried before but giving up food for God seems like a good way of showing my faith in God. But it's been a couple of days now and the problem hasn't been solved...

It almost sounds to me like you're viewing fasting as a mechanical ritual used for getting something, like paying a fee to receive a reward. I don't think that's the best way to approach your problem.

Christian fasting has historically been practiced as a means of mortifying sin, being delivered from sin, or growing close to God ... not necessarily as a way of trying to encourage God to help us with our problems. That isn't to say fasting is an inappropriate practice for such occasions, but that shouldn't be the sole purpose in doing it. If it is, then it isn't so much an expression of faith and devotion as it is an expectation that we can mechanically receive God's blessings by performing certain works, as if working a machine. That's what came to mind when I read, "it's been a couple days ... and the problem hasn't been solved." That sounds like, "I pressed the button, but nothing happened." That's especially so if the problem in question involves something more trivial than breaking a sinful habit or being delivered from the sinful acts of others. Sometimes God may answer our prayers in ways we don't expect, bringing about certain circumstances in our lives that may not seem good or hopeful to us, may even go entirely against what we want or expect, but ultimately serve a greater purpose which we cannot presently see, but which will bring glory to God in the end.

That's a rather open-ended response, but hopefully it's useful.
