  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes. Days of "obligation" are obligated. :)

Giving up things for Advent is a great idea. I usually don't abstain for things (other than sin -- or I try!!! ) during Advent as I do during Lent, but this year I feel led to do so.

We are all called to penance.
Same thing with me. It seems like several people are feeling led to this year.

I remember way back in my Grandmother's time--when people actually fasted for Lent--Sundays were NEVER part of the fast. They were special days in honor of the Lord's Resurrection. Days that were NOT penance days. Days that were not full of gloom. Don't know about now or about the Advent fast, but I have a feeling that PaulS would have known.

Sundays are never days of fast, since every Sunday is a little Easter. As for Advent, historically, it, like Lent, was a period of fasting and penance, but the Advent fast has fallen out of use. I'm not sure when. I do know that in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, there's no mention of fasting during Advent (other than the Ember Days). New Advent, however, mentions a custom in the US of fasting on Fridays during Advent.
