  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I plan to fast today to be closer to God, to break my overeating, practice temperance, quit smoking, and possibly break my addiction to coffee.
You're trying to do a lot of things at once.

Certainly you should stay away from tobacco.

My mother cautioned me about having more than two drinks. I finally gave up alcohol altogether.

I learned that drinking coffee late in the day caused serious problems and eventually gave up caffeine altogether.

As for overeating, stay away from sweets - they have no nutritional value. Keep you fat intake, especially saturated fat, at a moderate level.

If you have difficulty, fyi, being well rested and drinking lots of water can make it easier. You also my find that God will support you with strength for your body if you ask him for it. Occasionally take a few minutes to pray for that during your fast. If you want to fast regularly and are looking for guidance regarding how long or frequently to fast, then know that in the OT times a fast was between the sunrise and sunset (I've modified that to between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.). I don't remember anything in Scripture about how frequently to fast, but there is a reference to twice a week by a righteous man in Luke 18:12.
