  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Fantasy Magic

Is writing about magic in a fantasy novel acceptable?

  • Yes. Put in as much magic as you think the story needs, but make sure it's not 'real' magic.

  • Yes, but only put in a little magic.

  • Only the villain can use magic, and that magic MUST be portrayed in a negative light.

  • No. Don't put any magic in your story at all, because magic of any sort is evil.

  • Other (please specify)

Personally, I kind of think it wouldn't have mattered if he'd tried...but perhaps that's my cynical side coming out.

Anyway, as far as the OP goes, one of the reasons I read fantasy books is because of the magic in them. I grew up watching Disney fairytales, and there's something, dare I say enchanting, about a world with magic. Obviously it's not depicting the real world, but that's why it's called fantasy.

Albeit, I have read some fantasy books that I just didn't feel comfortable with, for whatever reasons (usually it has more to do with the religion in the books than the magic, however); but for the most part, I have to say I don't mind magic in fantasy stories, so long as it's not occultic or whatever.

I try to write Christian fantasy, it was fairy tales that first inspired me to write, and my 5th grade teacher. I like Disney movies, to this day I write Disney fan fiction. I put in magic, but it is the villains that use most of the real magic. The good guys have magic like miracles, nearly all my heroes are Christians. I put in fantasy/magical creatures like dragons, unicorns, fairies, and sometimes mermaids. And yes, I make a lot of these creatures be Christians. I need to work on my story about Princess Mirabelle and her dragon friend Rosara. They are going to have a lot of adventures together! In this story Princess Mirabelle has a mentor/teacher named Daniel, he is like Daniel the prophet who was thrown in the lions' den in the Bible, a man of God.
