  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Fansubs anyone?

I'm insanely backlogged, so it's actually just Bleach, pretty much (oh, I wish they'd kill off those freaking modsouls and get fully back to the manga storyline).

I do have several other series I'm following, however (in other words, downloading and saving for later):

Hidamari Sketch
Lucky Star
Reideen
Shining Tears X Wind

There's also shows from last season that haven't completed (Code Geass, Negima?!, Happiness!, Super Robot Wars, and Tokimeki Memorial + some assorted OVAs like Hellsing Ultimate, _summer, Mai-Otome Zwei, To Heart 2, and whatever those Shuffle! Memories-related specials were), and I've been contemplating whether or not to go ahead and start Devil May Cry. Other series I'm looking forward to would be Nanatsuiro Drops, Prism Ark, the second season of Higurashi, and whatever CLANNAD really turns out to be ('cuz I'm getting mixed signals there - is it going to be a movie or a television series, or both?). I also find it pretty funny that all those upcoming series are based on games. If Haruhi gets a second run I'll get that one too.

I don't really know why this would matter, but in general I go for the MKV/H.264 releases if possible - even though my computer is usually way too old to play them; I'm more concerned about quality, and some of them use softsubs, which makes it a whole lot easier if I decide I want to make an AMV with the footage. Besides, by the time I actually get around to watching said releases I'll probably have a new computer that can handle them just fine - otherwise I can go over to my grandparents' house and use their computer to watch them.

If it weren't for fansubs, I wouldn't be able to watch many anime and I wouldn't know the best ones at all e.g. I'm sure Rahxephon never made it to Italy and an argument exists that it's hands down the best Japanese animation has produced so far (although I'm not fond of comparisons between many totally different shows each with his own particular theme, setting and target audience). I expect fansubs have done a lot for anime, it wouldn't be as widespread as it is without them.

I only watch fansubs with anime. The American actors always have someone who makes me cringe, so if that's the case, why try and watch it when you can watch it naturally?
Besides that, most of the series I see aren't released in English.

Yes, they do actually translate the series. Putting out trollsubs/fakesubs is highly looked-down on - AFAIK, dattebayo are the only ones that do that kind of crap, and even then it's not too often and clearly marked (some people just don't recognize the tag beforehand and get worked into a tizzy).

Sometimes it isn't a pure Japanese->English translation, though. Some groups use Chinese subs and then translate from those (Doremi is the first one that comes to mind on their subs for the Mai-Otome specials). This is not the same as the bootleg anime one buys on eBay that comes from Hong Kong with wonky English subtitles ('Do not want!', anybody?).

In certain cases though the translators may get something wrong - this is often the case in terms of English/other foreign language loanwords or words intended to sound like foreign languages. Often the translator will spell it as it's pronounced by the speaker, which is difficult because the basic structure of Japanese is fundamentally different from English. In those cases sometimes you'll have a competent editing or proofreading team who can catch the errors and correct them, while other times they'll slip through and Engrishy-sounding buzzwording abounds (much to my annoyance, might I add). Bleach in particular seems to be especially vulnerable to this for some reason.

There's a wide variance when it comes to quality - some groups are better than others. There may be several groups covering the same series, thus giving viewers a choice. Most anime series that get aired usually get subbed nowadays, although if English companies license the series the groups may or may not cease their releases (the issue gets rather complicated here, often due to geography or other constraints).

I watch fansubs of anime that haven't been licensed for distribution in the U.S. (Claymore, most recently) Licensed anime I rent from Netflix (and use the audio options to switch to subtitles -- HATE American voice dubs!)

Ya, I only watch the unlicensed ones.

Ooo, I didn't even know you could rent them from NetFlix. I've definitely got to check that out. Specially since there's one I'd love to watch that just recently got licensed.

Be warned that there is some lag time between an anime being licensed and it actually being available on DVD -- sometimes it's just a few months; other times, it lingers in limbo, licensed but not actually distributed, indefinitely. Depends on how much money the company (a) has available for the project; and (b) hopes to make off the distribution.

Check Animesuki for lists of licensed anime (and torrent links for unlicensed).

Netflix is actually getting better about having a good selection of anime available. A few years ago I was unimpressed, but now I don't have much trouble finding what I'm looking for -- especially since I have a pretty long backlog!
