  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey, I was just wondering who here enjoys writing fan fiction, and what your experiences are with it?

I've never been obsessed with it, but I've always dreamed of writing for my favorite super-heros, and last year I submitted a proposal for the Eberron RPG novel series. The proposal got rejected, but I've been toying with the idea of writing the book anyway, just for fun.

So, what kinds of fanfic do you write, and do you post them online?

fanfiction is taking a different author's characters and writing a story using them. Giving full credit, of course.

I used to write fan fiction, but as it developed the characters changed so much from the original I just change a bit around and created an original work of art. :)

While there is nothing like an original work. I enjoy writing fanfics. I have learned alot from writing them and having older more experianced people oon the message board that are showing how to inprove my writing. (one is a proofreader for a publishing company.) I really have learned more especially since it is a hands on kindaof thing. Besides it keeps the creative juices flowing ;) I have to write alot of acidemic stuff ( I am taking classes at the college) and I don't have the time to write an entire novel...maybe it is lazy but at least I am writing something everyday whereas if I wasn't doing fanfic I wouldn't write nearly as much.

(Sorry for the muddled thoughts I am in the middle of writing an acidemic paper.... bnlech ;) )

Well, if you don't have the time for an original novel, and you're having fun, then it's cool. I just meant that most people would probably be a lot more satisfied with an original work.

How true...and I am working on an original work when I get the chance (I am outlining my plot and writing charater anylisis right now.) I have just found that fanfics were a great step for me to learn how to write...especially since I had premade charaters and I just devolped them more. I mostly just write fanfics cause they are "light" and keep me from getting rusty. But I understand your point if someone ONLY writes ff and never devolps their talents in original work then they are wasting something Great. :)

I'm currently in the process of writing a fanfic based on dbz. It takes place after z's ending, I guess you can say it's a different version of dbgt. It's tough for me, since I love the show so much and I want to write something that accurately portrays it. As a fan, that's most important. If Akyra Toriyama himself ever came across it and could say, "wow, that's a neat concept", that's what I'm aiming for. That and of course for fellow fans to enjoy it. It's going to be a neat project, I'm doing the majority of the writing while a friend is doing the drawings for it. It'll take some time though, so my friend and I aren't going to work on it and produce it until our time schedules free up; so it'll be as authentic as we can make it. But when we do it's going to be very fun!

Also, sorry to go off topic, but whoever gave me my shield, pencil, and belt, thank you :)

Hey, this does sound like a good way to practice writing skills! There are times when tv or a book inspires you and you wish you could just continue the story... It's a good idea!

What about after you write it - do you put it on a special site so that others can read it too?

There are several sites out there where you can post your stories. Just enter 'fan fiction' or 'fanfic' into Google to get started. And, back in the day (that would be WAAY back in the mid-1990s), the place where I first heard about fanfic were the usenet groups alt.startrek.fic and alt.comicbooks.lsh. I don't know if they're still being used, but I'm sure there are other usenet groups in action now.

There are A LOT of star trek fanfic sites out there. I really enjoy reading some of them.

I put mine on a message board with other fans of a show I watch. But you can also write it just for "you".

It is a great exercise, especially if you are looking to practice and not just "float" along. It is a small task and managble incase you a person that gets over whelmed easily and just needs something inbetween working on their novel or whatever. Sometimes I just need a break from my "heavy" writing so I sit back relax anf have fun with my ff!

I've tried writing fanfiction a few times, but I always end up feeling like I can't keep the characters "in character". Unlike my original characters, I don't feel like I know someone else's characters well enough to write about them correctly. So I've more or less stopped writing fanfiction. Might try it again some time, though - I'm not sure.

But, there are many people who write good fanfics, and I like to read those!

I wrote a total of 5 fanfics on Harry Potter, but that was before God convicted me on it. I don't really write fanfics perse but I do read a lot of them. I'm writing an original work right now so I don't have time or energy to do a fanfic.

I write fanfiction. It's a good break from the writing I have to do for work (even though that's creative) and it's like a vacation that's an outlet. It's an easy release when I don't have time to delve deeply into my original works. One of the things about writing for a living - you don't get a lot of time to get into your own original work even though you're writing all the time.

I think it's an exceptional exercise that can sometimes stretch your writing finesse more than you'd imagine. Writing your own original fic is more satisfying - but it's easy. You create the world and create the characters. Practice writing in someone else's sandbox and keeping the characters and the universe real and you'll see it's good exercise. And it fixes endings you might not like or agree with. ;)

I've written fanfic for a lot of movies and shows that I enjoy and it's a good thing. But be careful when you wander into fanfic - a lot of really really depraved people twist wonderful programs and movies to their own disgusting ends. It can be dangerous if you're not ready for it. I've stumbled into a lot of homosexual fanfic for things that aren't even close to being that in their original forms. *shakes head* And smutty fic for clean decent characters/relationships.
