  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There are more false doctrines than one can count.

What does a false teacher look like?

Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

It is clear they look just like the rest of the sheep. For the most part they usually teach that they are the only ones right.

How did the Lord and the apostles handle false teachers?

Matthew 12:34
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Matthew 23:33
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Galatians 1:8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

It is clear in scripture that they took off the kid gloves and talked rough to them.

NEXT TIME: How to tell a false doctrine from the truth.

IN THE MASTER'S SERVICE,

This I want to hear, since most of the false doctrines of which you speak come supported by a boatload of Bible verses and cunning argumentation.

How does one tell them apart?

Why are the true doctrines not obvious to everyone, if we are all able to use the Bible as our sole and highest authority?

Forgive my igorance but who are the three photos of??

I dont recognise them....

The two at the top, left to right, are Pat Robertson and Kenneth Copeland. The one at the bottom is Benny Hinn. All three are Protestant evangelists.

The three in the next post are, of course, the Three Stooges: Moses Horwitz (Moe Howard), Jerome Horwitz (Jerome "Curly" Howard), and Larry Fein.

On a serious note, since the OP is quite serious, how do we know if a person is a false teacher? What are the signs?

One sign would be someone who claims they are ushering in a new move of the Spirit, as if Christ left anything incomplete when He established God's Kingdom among men. Christ's work brought the fullness of God to mankind, so we don't need any new move of the Spirit or revival, as if God ever left, or as if the gates of hell ever prevailed over Christ's Church. I think there are times of greater faith, and surely to come are times of apostacy, but we must simply unite ourselves to Christ's Church and cleave to Him, working out our salvation with fear and trembling.

A false teacher would also be someone who promises us things that clearly God Himself has not promised in this life, such as health, wealth, etc. This is a gospel of temporal pleasures and satisfaction, which was created by men, not God.

A false teacher also would be someone who teaches things that cannot be traced back to Christ, perhaps claiming to have new revelations. For example, the Pentecostal teaching of the "baptism in the Holy Spirit" only dates back to the early 1900's when Charles Parham and some Bible school students in Kansas, US, had this experience they believed was from God, which cannot be traced back any further. The teaching of the "infallibility of the Pope" was only codified by the RCC in 1870, and although they claim it was always believed, it cannot be traced back to the Early Church Fathers, in fact, their writings seem to clearly refute such a teaching.

Basil

Forgive me. I mean no offense, but this is the truth as best as I can ascertain.

There are false teachers who are within our faith and using Christianity to lead us from the truth. That is where the most dangerous teachings come from. There are Christians who are willing to compromise sound doctrine for the sake personal success. I am having trouble with MOST (not all) television preachers have become a part of our false prophets who teaches "ichy ears" sermons and invite those who listen to join their concept of Christianity.

There is a positive side of False teachings when Paul said in these verses: Philippians 1:17-18 (New International Version) The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Some false teachers are obvious then some not so obvious.
I try to speak the truth as I see it but someone else may see it differently.
I am not a teacher but still held accountable if I intentionally mislead someone.
What if I mislead someone unintentionally?

Christ said that you shall know them by their fruit. Not the way they live, remember they look like sheep, but by what they preach.
Here are the marks of a false prophet:

They make man to be more than he is and God to be less than He is.

Their message is centered on man doing something instead of what God has already done.

A false prophet preaches about things a true prophet preaches Christ.

A false prophet gives you rules to live by a true prophet seeks to set you free.

A false prophet tries to get you to do something, a true prophet simply proclaims the truth and leaves the rest to God.

Okay, the picture thing gave me a chuckle and certainly provides some good visualization of some false teachers/prophets.

False teachers will tickle our ears. They'll give us a 'jesus' to satisfy the flesh. The emphasis of the teachings will be me, me, me. God wants to bless ME. God wants me to have this or that but it all comes down to ME, ME, ME. That's not the Jesus of the bible. Find a preacher who puts the emphasis on God and not on me and I think you've got something valuable there.

God bless.

False doctrines are lies. Who is the father of lies?

But let God be true and every man a liar. For we do not live on bread alone but on every word which comes from God.

As we know from God: HE ALONE is the highest authority. The bible, being created by God, has only the authority the LORD HIMSELF gave it. (I'm not yelling btw, just giving emphasis).

It is a false doctrine that the bible is the highest authority on God. Perhaps few can tell the difference, but that is what makes it such a great lie. God ALONE is the highest authority. Only because of Him we know scripture to be true.

I know almost nothing, but in this I am sure: God and God alone is the Sovereign Lord.

Hey, I'm guessing you will not take offence to what I am about to say either because you said this:
this is the truth as best as I can ascertain

I will confess, I have been in great and grave errors before. I know there are areas of my belief which do not inspire me with a lot of confidence now (I look forward to rebuke from God). Only knowledge which I have recieved from God I will ever say I know, and that is not my knowledge, not my ascertaining, not my figuring out, but what the Lord Himself has declared. I know almost nothing of God.

An attitude of humility, as I believe I'm seeing here in the above post, is IMHO the very best attitude of all. One scripture comes to mind:

"Let God be true and every man a liar"

Everyone is full of @#%@# in some ways. Unless anyone here is willing to blasphemy and say "I know God" (in the full sense).

There is nothing that delights me more, nothing that is greater to my shame, then to be shown how I am in error by the Lord.

Praise be to God. He is our teacher.

Therefore let us be compassionate to eachother and ourselves, knowing that we are all but fallen creatures, brought to God only through His Living Word.
