  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

That was not what I said or meant.

Here try it this way:

If faith isn't learned or acquired then indoctrinating children is based upon a bad assumption.

I am of the option that this is obviously untrue, many people become faithful precisely because of their religious upbringing.

Faith and religion in my opinion are learned activities. I am however not sure whether belief or faith are choices, I would respond in the negative if asked in that manner.

So, faith in democracy is not a learned activity?

Where did I say or imply that?

You didn't imply it. I was just asking. I am free to ask, right?

To the point though.

I have no qualms about 'indoctrinating' my child about the precepts of Christianity. Am I abusive if I do this?

Sorry, to me, starting a sentence with "So" infers a conclusion from the preceding text.

Most things are going to be learned behaviors, especially values.

I wouldn't call it abusive no, it seems like something humans are prone to naturally do, instill the values upon their young that they themselves hold.

Like all things though, it depends on the specifics.

What do you mean by acquired or learned? Aren't both of them the same?

Sorry for not coming back earlier on this thread - for some reason I am not getting email alerts.

I don't think I was actually taught to speak English I acquired it along the way as I grew up as a toddler, similarly with my accent. I would however have to learn a new language. My brother in law has lived in Detroit for about 10 years and now speaks with an American accent.

The same with faith, being immersed in a faith from birth, it will rub off on to you. But to obtain a new faith must involve a degree of learning. I accept that total immersion a culture will assist in obtaining faith. However it must also require a degree of learning, especially were their is little or no contact with others of that faith.

So what are the steps to obtain faith by learning alone. The absence of objective testing and feedback may be a stumbling block to its acquisition.
