• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Facing Our Giants

“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalms 34:4, KJV) – these are the words of David, the same man who in 1 Samuel 17, faced and defeated the giant of his life, Goliath. An ordinary shepherd boy, who in spite of being told by the king of Israel “There is no way you can go against this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:33), overcame doubt and fear, giving David and observing Israelites freedom from the giants (Philistine army) of their lives.

“You are only a boy, and he has been in the army since he was a boy” (1 Samuel 17:33b) – how could David, with only a staff, a sling, and five stones (1 Samuel 17:40), exhibit both the courage and faith to stand firm, after being reminded of his frailties, in comparison to the enormous trial he faced against? David was victorious because he knew “it was God’s battle and not his own” (1 Samuel 17:47b). Not in David’s strength did he fight his giant, but instead David fought “in the name of the Lord Almighty” (1 Samuel 17:45).

In spite of death threats given by Goliath to David (1 Samuel 17:44), David chose to remember all the previous times God saved him from the “claws of the lions and bears” (1 Samuel 17:34-37). Numerous successful past experiences of overcoming smaller trials through Christ gave David the hope, courage, and faith to confront a more challenging trial in the form of Goliath.

“Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head” (1 Samuel 17:46) – that is how David responded when his giant tried to defeat David through fear. With only one stone and a sling, that is what happened: God conquered Goliath and David beheaded his giant (1 Samuel 17:51).

In John 16:33, Jesus said: “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Through Christ, we have the power to rise above all adversity (Philippians 4:13). But to take advantage of that force, we must abide in Him. That often requires surrendering our fears to God. The same Rescuer who delivered David from all his fears and giants will also do the same for you and me in all our times of need. In the meantime, we just need to focus upon the truths of all our past victories through Christ and not on the lies of the fears that daily harass our minds. If we do, in God’s perfect timing, we will thereafter find victory over our Goliaths, even when it seems like all we have is a “staff, a sling, and five stones”.
