  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

So I got the job at the bank, with a start date of April 2. My next hurdle would be when and how to sit down in front of management and have the difficult conversation about being pregnant and in 5 Months needing time off for that.

It wound up being a conversation I won’t have to have because of Facebook.

I was always told not to put anything on Facebook that could get me in trouble. No duh this is common sense... but I lead a fairly boring life anyway. While my wall is full of humor I just don’t do anything that could be incriminating or a huge turn off.
There’s no photos or statuses about partying too hard, getting high, sleeping around or vandalizing stuff. Because I don’t do that.
There’s also no posts with a lot of negativity, swearing, racism, lewd humor etc...
So I hadn’t leant my Facebook page much thought at all since it wasn’t guilting my conscience.

What IS on there is updates about my pregnancy...
Which these bank people stalked.

So when I called for follow up about my start date, the lady told me they already know about it because of my Facebook... LOL

THEY STILL HIRED ME

Every employer checks all the popular social media sites for every potential new hire. Since it is commonplace, I am not sure it should be viewed as "stalking."

Eh, I don't use FB much but if they asked to see my FB I'd say "No thanks, I'll find a job elsewhere!". Assuming they are asking to see it of course. I'm pretty sure by law though they can't hire/reject someone based on if they want to show their FB account.

An employer can hire, reject, or fire based off of Facebook and the research of social media accounts is a basic step in all job applications now, even front line cashiers at grocery stores can have their social media examined by prospective employers.

I’ll go a step further...I don’t have a FB page.
Yeah, that can be a problem too, as they can take that as hiding behind a false identity they have not found yet.

It’s a shame one has to participate in such unnecessary mediums to be socially accepted nowadays. Luckily I’m self employed.

My religion does not allow of Facebook and issues such as this. It is best, I believe, to distance oneself of this social media and not to participate within such media.

I have heard of the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others to be detrimental to one's reputation which can cause issues for one's employment.

Forums such as this can allow one to express themselves within its privacy. Should one need to express oneself, there are blogs here which can be only viewed by members. No employer can see this unless he/she has my username and password.

Too much heartache and ruined lives have been the result of social media.

When one is focused not upon social media and one can focus upon a job or more important things, I would think it would be much better.

When I filled out my application for my job, it asked for social media. I had to UN-click Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and all.

My social life online is here and I have nice stuff in my email.

The day my employer demands I use social media is the day he'd better find a replacement for me.

Hugs and all good things

It’s a shame one has to participate in such unnecessary mediums to be socially accepted nowadays. Luckily I’m self employed.

To be fair, having screened and assisted in finding employment for quite literally thousands of people, I never once had anybody hired or fired for not having social media. When we can’t find a page, we do assume they either don’t have one or have another name they use, both of which are fine. The over-reaching goal by searching isnjust to make sure that when we hire somebody and their name is searched online by other employees or clients, they don’t find a social media with shocking content. Drug use, bragging or crimes, etc etc.

You’d be surprised, both happen... A lot. We had one guy that got hired who a lazy case manager didn’t search out his page and his third or fourth week at work, a client said she refused to do business with us because we had hired an unapologetic rapist. We searched his name online as well as his social media and, sure enough, it turned out calling him an “unapologetic rapist” was the very nicest way he could have been described. By the time he was fired, media had been notified, we had to give press statements... It was a mess. But there it all was, in black and white (with pictures) on his public social media.

That’s why the first thing I told candidates was either have no social media or set it to private. We assume everybody had a dark side or a skeleton filled closet, we just don’t want to see it in an easy Google search. So be the biggest idiot you want to be, but in private.

To the poster above, while an employer can ask you to maintain social media for the company you work, employee rights state you cannot be forced to open or maintain a personal social media account.

I've learned to use Facebook just as a way to connect with friends or relatives who live far away. I avoid politics or any drama there. On Twitter I'm pretty open about sharing my faith and if someone is offended or doesn't hire me because of that, then I'm living the way I believe God wants me to live.

I am thankful all this social media wasn't around when I was stumbling my way through my teens and 20s..

I'm nearly 2 1/2 years Facebook free and I can say that I'm happier without it. The world was meant to have a little mystery to it, or so it was when I was growing up. Sometimes I think it was better wondering what my old friends were up to than knowing. ;)

I am curious why people don't have their profiles set to private. I don't post often on facebook so there wouldn't be much to see, but why would you want strangers to have the option of seeing your personal life?

I am glad it worked out and made that conversation easier for you on your new job though!
