If we look at times of trial and doubtors and detractors, antitheists... how much influence for the better or worse did Christian fables and other fiction have on helping belief in Jesus?

Paul taught us not to use fables.

I think of John Bunyon, AJ Cronin, JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and others.

It looks like King David set the tradition of testimony as far more valuable than fable. Children like fables.

Paul preferred to use testimonies but refers to profane and silly fables. Not all are, like Aesop's and those in Animal Farm.

Aramaic Bible in Plain English
Psalm 119:36
Turn my heart to your testimonies and not to fables.

NKJV
2 Peter 1:16
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

NKJV
1 Timothy 4:7
But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness.

aul taught us not to use fable

Where did he teach this?

I know he cautioned against endless genelogies and cleverly deviced stories.
The contex of these is of those who are devicive or spreading false teachings.

John Bunyon told cleverly written stories based on the bible, C.S. Lewis told stories that pointed to Jesus for hose who could see.

With all teaching no matter where it is from we need to test it against scripture, which in turn implies that we know what scriptue teaches.

When you remove completely religion from our collective imagination, stories and myths we like, don't be surprised when secular myths and stories devoid of all devotion come to replace them and influence the average person.

Tolkien and Lewis have done far more for Christianity than either you or I.
