Matt 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand

According to Numbers 19:1-9, it is necessary to use the sacrificial ashes of a young red cow which has not yet reproduced for ritual cleansing of the Temple.

An American rancher was known to have a herd of these red cattle, which he hoped could be used.

In May of 1997 a shocking announcement was made that a red heifer had been born unexpectedly in Israel! Examination of the animal revealed that, though it was born to parents which were not red, it's features would qualify it to be used in this way when it is of age. In early 1998 a few white hairs developed on its tail, making it no longer acceptable, but there is optimism that a suitable heifer will become available in the near future.

I believe it was because the temple was destroyed - there could be no more sacrifices for the remission of sin as a result. That's why Rabbinical teaching took the place of sacrificial atonement as the most important facet of Judaism. I may be mistaken, though, and if so, please forgive me.

hmm... that makes partial sense at least.

the only part that doesn't, is that animal sacrifice preceded the temple... So what difference did it make if the temple was there?

I believe you are correct,that only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies to offer the sacrifices,after making sure he himself had been purified.

When did Jews stop offering sacrifices, and why?

"We stopped offering sacrifices because we do not have a proper place to offer them. The Torah specifically commands us not to offer sacrifices wherever we feel like it; we are only permitted to offer sacrifices in the place that G-d has chosen for that purpose. Deut. 12:13-14. It would be a sin to offer sacrifices in any other place, akin to stealing candles and wine to observe Shabbat.
The last place appointed by G-d for this purpose was the Temple in Jerusalem, but the Temple has been destroyed and a mosque has been erected in the place where it stood."

I'm not trying to be awkard here, but I really don't understand how you get Dan 9:27, from a passage talking about the Anointed One and abominations, to some Jews wanting to reinstate the laws of the OT?

Because it is prophecy about the anti-christ and events during the Tribulation,before Christians are raptured. These things must happen before the rapture,and then the "Day Of Wrath" comes upon the earth,the last 7 judgements of the Tribulation.

But I don't see how you're linking this prophecy to some Jews wanting a return to the Biblical system of offering sacrifices to their God. I mean, abominations and antichrists have little to do with this, unless you can explain, logically, how you have deduced that this is the fulfillment of that prophecy.
