• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

exposure/response therapy has been used for years to treat OCD. The best way I can explain it, is by using a common form of OCD as an example.

Germ OCD (handwashing) causes many to be concerned with washing their hands over and over and over, until they are perceived to be clean....which never happens, because the fear comes right back.
If we were going to follow the logic of the things you've mentioned in other threads....just how many times should this person wash their hands before they are clean? (how many times should we answer the questions of "am I saved?")

The correct therapy is to have the person wait as long as possible to wash their hands, let the anxiety come, and make the time waited longer every few days. Eventually, in time, the anxiety goes down. This is VERY hard work, and must be continued everytime the germ on the hands thought, comes up.

Now, how it works for religious OCD is this. When we get a thought that we aren't saved, we just say "oh well." Every time we have the thought. (yes, I hyperventalated when I heard what I would have to do). But my doctor said these words to me "The God who created heaven and earth, understands OCD and what needs to be done for you to get better. I did everything he told me from that moment on...and guess what? It worked.

I was tormented day and night (even my dreams) from thoughts of damnation because of OCD. I injured myself, I went to psych wards, spent time in padded rooms.....and the exposure/response therapy helped even me. I now lead a normal life.

This therapy should be done under a psychiatrist's care.
