Here is what the Lord Jesus Christ said :

Matthew 5:17-19 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

What is the law that Jesus is referring to?

We are not under the law of moses and that issue Wass even sorted long ago in acts 15

Acts 15:1-29 NKJV
And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." [2] Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question. [3] So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren. [4] And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them. [5] But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses." [6] Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. [7] And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: "Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. [8] So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, [9] and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. [10] Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? [11] But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they." [12] Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles. [13] And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, "Men and brethren, listen to me: [14] Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name. [15] And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written: [16] ' After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up; [17] So that the rest of mankind may seek the LORD, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the LORD who does all these things.' [18] "Known to God from eternity are all His works. [19] Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, [20] but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. [21] For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath." [22] Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren. [23] They wrote this, letter by them: The apostles, the elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings. [24] Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law"-to whom we gave no such commandment- [25] it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, [26] men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. [27] We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth. [28] For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: [29] that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.

That's confusing. First God dictates the Law. Jesus affirms the Law according to the previous poster. Now it seems the disciples have decided that only some of the Law is applicable. So are we to hold these new dietary restrictions?

No, you do not "have to" follow the dietary laws in the Old Testament, unless you convert to Judaism. In Christianity, salvation is by grace (unmerited favor from God) through faith (belief in what we do not see) that Jesus' death on the cross paid the price for our sins.

"The Law" is also called "The Law of Moses" and it is not only the commandments found in Exodus chapter 20 and Deuteronomy chapter 5, but comprises the first five books of the bible. These five books are thought to have been given by God to Moses and include the creation of earth, creation and fall of man, the first murder (Cain slew his brother Able) etc, and that is the "Law".

You need to read the entire bible to understand God's revelation to us, the way of salvation through repentance of sin and believing that Jesus died on the cross and was raised the third day to reconcile us to God and make a way for us to be saved!

It's like a movie, you wouldn't get a movie and not watch the whole thing, but instead go to "scene selection" and say "This part looks good" and just watch selected scenes!
You need to see the whole movie to get the "whole picture". This will help you understand how God revealed Himself to man (Abraham), the laws and covenants God made with men, the plan of salvation, etc.

Always pray before you read, so that God will enlighten you with the Holy Spirit, without which it's just a ''dead read". The Spirit makes it come to life, and you will understand.

Peace brother, keep seeking! Keep knocking and asking, for Jesus promised that
Matthew 7:8 "Everyone who seeks will find, and to he who knocks the door will be opened"

Seek with all your heart! GOD PROMISES
Jeremiah 21:13 "You will seek Me, and you will find Me, if you search for Me with all your heart"

God bless and have a beautiful day!

Purpose of the law:

Galatians 3:22-25 NKJV
But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. [23] But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. [24] THEREFORE THE LAW WAS OUR TUTOR TO BRING US TO CHRIST, THAT WE MIGHT BE JUSTIFIED (DECLARED RIGHTEOUS) BY FAITH. [25] BUT AFTER FAITH HAS COME, WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER A TUTOR.

Jesus Christ is the end of the law for righteousness!

Romans 10:1-4 NKJV
Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. [2] For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. [3] For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. [4] FOR CHRIST IS THE END OF THE LAW FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS TO EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES.

There are three types of laws found in the OT. Dietary, moral and ceremonial. The dietary and ceremonial are "works" laws whereas the moral laws are "heart" laws. The heart laws IMHO are still binding. Since you legalists feel you must follow all of the OT laws I will quote a few of them for you. Relax! There are only 613 of them besides those in the NT!

For an instance of one of the many dietary laws lets look at Deut 14:8 "...the swine is unclean for you, because it has cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud; you shall not eat their flesh or touch their dead carcasses." No more sausage and egg McMuffins for you, and no more ham and eggs or pork chops, but relax, grasshoppers are considered clean so have at 'em.

A couple of ceremonial laws can be found in Lev 19;19 "You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed....nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material." Now you legalists who want to follow all the OT laws, you must go to your clothes closet and throw out anything that is not 100% of one thread. The Salvation Army will love you! Are you planning on planting tomatoes and green beans in your garden this year? Forget about it it is against God's law.

Here are several more examples of ceremonial laws. Jewish women were "unclean" during her menstrual perior according to Lev 15:19 ""Whenever a woman has her menstrual period, she will be ceremonially unclean for seven days. Anyone who touches her during that time will be unclean until evening." So now the legalistic woman can stay at home on Sunday mornings, as an unclean woman is not welcome at church ceremonies.

Now here is a good law for those who have a rebellious son. Deut 21:18-21 "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city and they shall say to the elders of his city, 'This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.' Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear." After you do this I hope the judge you get for your murder trial is well versed in the OT laws. Your defense will actually be quite simple; "your honor, I always follow all of God's laws. I don't eat pork, I don't wear clothing of two different kinds of thread, my wife never goes to church when she is having her period, and as you can see your honor I have never cut the hair off the sides of my head or trimmed my beard as commanded in Lev 19:27 so I am innocent, see ya later."

Hopefully you don't have any pimples, or use a cane or have any scars on your face or wear eyeglasses because according to Lev 21:18-20 you cannot offer a sacrifice to God. "For no one who has a blemish shall draw near, a man blind or lame, or one who has a mutilated face or a limb too long or a man who has an injured foot or an injured hand, nor or a hunchback or a dwarf or a man with a defect in his sight or an itching disease or scabs or crushed testicles." I guess I'm out as I have a chicken pox scar on my forehead and I had surgery on my left foot two years ago and as a result I can't walk perfectly anymore. Woe is me.

I'm sure glad we live under grace and not the law.

These also were temporary regulations to accommodate the Christian Jews as they assimilated Christian Gentiles into their fellowship.

There is a common false gospel going around, has been since the beginning of the church, which is "lawlessness". Jesus said:
Matthew 7:23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS." This He says to those who say "Lord, Lord!" to Him but He never knew them.

This lie from Satan is known as "antinomianism". It is the false teaching that because we are under grace and no longer under the law, we can sin freely and still be saved!
Paul addressed this issue:
1 Cor. 6:9-10 "Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God"

So do not be deceived, we are not bound by the law, but if you are born again (and you must be to understand the bible) you will not practice lawlessness! We all sin, but do not practice willful disobedience after we are saved. Those who do deny the power of Christ to save us FROM our sins, and make a mockery of His sacrifice on the cross.

Hebrews 10:26- 27 "For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation"

Now it seems the disciples have decided that only some of the Law is applicable. So are we to hold these new dietary restrictions?

If you're a gentile (the audience of the letter) and if you're fellowshipping with Jews (the context of the question the letter addresses), then yes. If you do not fellowship with Jews, the answer is no. Simple as that.
