I just had a bit of a discussion with someone who said that a person's sins are carried over from generation to generation and he gave me Exodus 34:7 as proof of this. Yet 2 Chronicles 25:4 would seem to contradict this. How would you answer this?

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

God provided both the spiritual law and the civil law for Israel. I believe God was referring to the enforcement of civil law. This should not be confused with iniquity, which is passed down from generation to generation. Of course, a father committing a crime would not pass down the iniquity of any sin after his child is already born.

Sins themselves are not as you say carried over from father to son to grandsons in so much as the sons do not pay for the price of the fathers sins. Ezekiel 18 states
20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
So, if a man robs a bank, will God punish that man’s son, even though the son had nothing to do with the robbery? Absolutely not. However, it is quite possible that the father who robbed the bank is making life more difficult for his son, through the natural consequences of his crime. Also, if the man is training his son in the techniques of bank robbing, then there is a good chance the son will follow the same path of dishonesty. In that case, the sin is copied by the son, and the punishment for the sin follows.
Exodus 34 is not the first mention of this, it is Ex 20, the giving of the Ten commandements. And one should note that this statement is embeded within the second commandment to not engage in idol worship.
5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
His promise to the nation of Israel is that if one passes their sin down from each generation, training their children in idolatry and disobedience, God will not let His mercy continue, He will stop having mercy and bring punishment. Those who teach what is against Him and His commands will have their children’s children acquire the practice from their parents and be punished for it. Because God will not allow this to continue with the people he is training as a nation to obey his commandments.
They were instructed: “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

Also, Exodus 34:6-7 is God declaring His own name to Moses (Only time this happens in the Old Testament), and within that He says that He keeps mercy for thousands of generations, but He punishes sins down to the third or fourth generation showing the limit of His anger, but the limitlessness of His mercy.

The last post is great. God is showing how his mercy far outshines His Righteous punishment. One thing I noticed is that families with "red flags" or disfunctions tend to take about 3 or 4 generations to work out, according to Psychiatrists. One who seeks healing from the Lord can break out of the cycle.

It is not really speaking about the sin being passed on because that would contradict the other verse you spoke about. It is dealing more with how the sin of the parent would affect that position of their child and their child would be in a more disadvantageous position due to the sin of their parents.
If the parents of the child sin and lose their position within society this would obviously be passed on to the child through no fault of their own. This is added incentive for parents to refrain from sinning so that their children do not suffer.
