"Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?" (Exodus 15:11)

The context for this expression is Miriam's song following the deliverance of the nation of Israel under Moses when they were able to escape from the Egyptian army and pass through the Red Sea. When the Egyptians tried to follow them through the Red Sea, they were drowned. With a series of great signs and wonders, Almighty God delivered His people and destroyed the enemies who had afflicted His people. The Holy God worked gloriously.

Moses had been commissioned to lead Israel for such a deliverance at the burning bush. There he was asked to remove his shoes because the ground where he encountered the LORD was holy ground (Exodus 3:5).

God is to be feared. Proverbs tells us that "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding". The fear of God is the foundation or underpinnings of true wisdom. In order to have true understanding, we must know what holiness is.

For children and all beginners in learning the ways of God, the fear of God is foundational.

"Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. (Psalms 34:11).

"God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him". (Psalms 89:7).

Surely, the holiness of the LORD is a beautiful thing that is beyond the full comprehension of mortal humanity. Yet, it is right to imitate our God in his attributes of purity and holiness.

"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." (Hebrews 12:14).

"Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His Name: bring an offering, and come before Him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness". (1 Chronicles 16:29).

Hi there!

Great posting, and thanks for sharing.

Holiness in the Old Testament language is a setting apart or separating from .... God is certainly separated from the sin of humanity, and in being like God, we are called out of darkness into the light also.... called to be separated out of the sin of this world.
