• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was talking to my therapist today and she said to exercise just a little bit at a time and work your way up. Does does anyone know if exercise improves their mood or make them feel better. It seems like such a chore to do it however she said that if you exercise you will have more energy to do things and things won't be such a chore. Just wondering what everyone's opinion on this is.

Yes, the more you move, the more you have energy. And yes, it can make one feel good.

It can feel like a chore at first, but so what. The biggest problem is always the threshold we create in our minds, trying to tell ourselves how horrible it is when it's not. Something is better than nothing, and there's no rush to actually perform well. I bring an mp3-player loaded with my favorite songs with me when I go jogging/walking. Sometimes I do some pushups/situps/pullups/squats if I'm not going out.

Absolutely, it does. In fact I need to start getting back into it. I find that when I'm excercising regularly I feel much better about life.

Don't kill yourself initially. Just do something that you enjoy whether its kickboxing, yoga, running. Start slow because if you throw yourself into it you'll hate it. It really can make a difference. Excercise is considered a form of healing - not just for the body but for the mind and spirit too. Give it a try.

Yep. I have taken jogs and some simple muscle exercises for couple of months now. At first I couldn't even jog or run, I had to walk 90% of the time. Now I can jog/run about half of the time. They're short, 20-30 minute exercises. It clears my mind a little. I got a nice forest road near me, that's where I jog. It's good to see a little nature too. It actually feels like I'm stepping out of the dark, melancholic boredom and anxiety for a while, physically. Which is great spiritually and psychologically too, so it's a win-win situation.

Just do what you can, it's enough when you get your heartbeat up and sweat a little. Something is always better than nothing, and it's good if it's not just about performance. Eventually one can set certain goals for him/herself.

The other thing I find helpful about excercising is that it redirects my focus. It takes my mind off the depression and gives me a purpose, shed a pound or two, increase my time and distance, increase endurance. You come out of it thinking, hey, I just spent 1 hour not thinking about the dreadful "D" and placed my concentration elsewhere. And then you just feel better the rest of the day. :)

I'm the only one who has to report that exercise has not helped me at all. I hated it and so it made me feel worse. The problem with me is that if I don't feel like doing anything, then I really don't feel like doing anything, forcing my will on this issue has always been a negative and not a positive.

However I know that exercising is good for the mind and when I'm in the mood I go hiking in the estuary nearby it is beautiful there. Before I got really sick I used to hike all the time and was as fit as a fiddle but not anymore. I hope to gain this part back one day but important things first - sowing positive loving and truthful thoughts into our heart and mind is far more productive than exercise has ever been, but I suppose it is a kind of exercise - filling our spirit with good things.

2 Timothy 2:1-13
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

I can't lie--I hate exercising. I also have to admit it makes me feel better, mentally and physically. I have to have some good tunes to exercise, but I still would rather play video games. I go against my urge and do it anyway, because I feel more positive and I sleep better.
