I thought it might be fun if we were to share a few words of our own local dialect with each other just so we can all share the richness of the language and how it can vary from place to place. Here's some words commonly heard in Fife, Scotland and their English equivalent.
ben = through
hoose = house
bunker = worktop
glaikit = stupid
baffies = slippers
brae = hill
cannae = cannot
scunnered = bothered
blethering = talking nonsense
ken = know
bouffing oxters = sweaty underarms
stoating = drunk
hirpling = limping

Now it's your turn to let your own voice shine through ;)

Those are cool! Here we have the "dis, dat, dem, dose, dere" - which is this, that, them, those, there, of course. Other than that, most of what we say here is what most others in the states say, with a different accent.

Ya'll = You all.
Pert near = Pretty near.
Dreckly = Directly, soon.
Unch = a little bit.
Chucker = Somewhere under your neck that tickles.
Axe (ok, I don't use this) = Ask.
Fixin' = Getting ready to do something.
Sugar = Kiss.

I'm sure I can come up with more.

I really like Unch, what a great word :)
I've just thought of a couple of classic examples of the Fife dialect that make me smile

"Your sinning doctor" = your son and daughter :D
"d'ye ken Ken? Ken?" = do you know Kenneth? I wonder?"

Actually "unch" is a homemade word. ^_^

lol, it still sounds great though :thumbsup:
Do you have any words for types of weather other than the standard ones? I love the Scottish word for when it's grey, dull, overcast and threatening to rain, we call ir dreich (pronounced dreek) and a thick mist rolling in from the sea is a haar. A light rain is a smirl and heavy snow in Fife is known as once in a blue moon :D

This is the way my mom talked! She was from West Virginia - except the axe thing.

Well growing up in Wyoming and then moving to Michigan, I can come up with a few I think... :)

I "Reckon" = I suppose so...
"Fittin to" = Getting ready to...
And having grown up in Wyo I have noticed that I tend to drop the "G" off the end of my words!
Then there's the whole "Sodapop" deal! I'd always known it as "soda" but when I moved here everyone calls it "pop" ^_^

we have a LOT of rednecks around here!!
And I am One of them...^(To a real Southerner that is not an insult)

We also like

mammanem (Momma and them) Greeting

Horsefeathers (Swearword some prefer bulls)

Bless Your Heart (Go Away Stupid)

Fittin (for us is usually a piece that joins pipe)

1st cousin Once Removed (Maternal)

tote (Carry)

Brangus (Bring us)

Geeminilli (Exclamation) (Like Oh my word!)

We also say "have mercy" whenever we hear bad news or good gossip. :)

See Ya'll..

How about this one?

''hærta ta hørt'' (dialect from East Norway, and pronounced ''harta ta hewrt''),

and it means ''half of each'', but in ''proper'' Norwegian it is spelled ''halvparten av hver''. We have many funny dialects in li'l Norway.
