  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I actually have not been to Hawaii. Though of course it is famous for it's hot spot activities and shield volvanoes. One day I hope to go for a vacation there. Maybe collect some rocks. I'm also a big "lost" fan which was filmed there lol.

Ah, man...as a geologist....pick the Big Island when you go...

though to be fair, I understand being a geologist does not necessarily make you interested in volcanology. :)

Oh I'm very interested, it's just a matter of when the wife and I get vacation time from work and school lol. One day. I'll remember that though, big island dreams.

Why should I let your common sense carry any more weight in this regard, than it does regarding the events of the earth when it was being broken apart.

When you're interested in learning, let me know. Otherwise there is no point in talking about anything if you don't even acknowledge the existance of simple things like devonian rock.

Also, volcanoes don't exist everywhere on earth. Many roocks have not been affected by volvanic eruptions.
That is true in more recent times, but are you suggesting that you don’t think the earth's oldest rocks have been obliterated and recycled by the process of plate tectonics? Do you really think as a geologist that any of the earth's oldest rocks were left in their original state?

Trust me, when I want to learn, I'll go elsewhere.

The earths oldest magmatic rock that's been obliterated is far older than devonian rock. Our discussion has been about devonian rock, not hadean or archean rock.

I've been there... too many people with no common sense.
Perhaps we should do away with piblic universities then. Perhaps it won't take us back to the stone age.

For sure. heh.

Far and away the most interesting island for those interested in geology, imo. And...it's cheaper and less "touristy." Win, win.

Has black sand and green sand beaches, as well as a couple beaches with the finest white sand you could hope for.

And Volcanoes National Park is a can't miss for anyone, geologist or not.

I'm relatively familiar with Oahu, also. So if you ever plan a trip, feel free to message me for any advice.

That goes for anyone. I'd be happy to make recommendations.

Original state? No. What's your point?

“While the rock beds that define the start and end of the Devonian period are well identified, the exact dates are uncertain.”

“The Devonian period was a time of great tectonic activity...”
Wikipedia

Are you suggesting no rocks were affected in the Devonian period? Perhaps you should attend a public university.

Well obviously there was folding. Folding is not equivelant to obliteration. And folding doesn't disable our ability to identify the rocks as they are.

But this is actually good though. Notice that in the quote above, it stated that rock beds that define the start and end of the devonian are well defined.

If you believe this is true, then you too should be able to differentiate between devonian and non devonian rock.

How can you accurately predict with uncertain dates is the point.

Read post #1431... and let Hawaii go for now.

I did read it, and I'm baffled as to how you even came to the conclusion that he was claiming that. Did you word it wrong?

That said, I agree that we "probably" don't have any rocks on earth that were "left in their original state." Although, even that statement is weird because I don't really know what you mean by original state. Do you mean since the material most recently became rock? Do you mean since the material was rock the first time? Or do you mean something else?

At the risk of mockery, I will admit that not being fluent in geological terms, I can see your point. I'm only saying how can accurate "predictability" and "plate tectonics coupled with unknown forces and uncertain dates" be that dependable, that's all.
