  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well for your information, this thread aint about creationism.
Well, it's plainly obvious that those on this thread who are struggling to refute evolution are not doing so for scientific reasons.

This thread is about (and I quote the first post) "Evolution: it ain't real. period!<insert overuse of horribly obnoxious smilies here>". I'm sorry my dear Kiwi, but I hardly call that a thread to begin with. And since the first poster obviously doesn't believe that evolution is real, isn't it so that he is a creatonist? In other words; doesn't that mean that a deity made creation?

Evolution says that natural selection and mutations happened over billions of years. This in itself is more like an hypothesis. Therefore, how can we believe it?

1) Retro-viral insertions.

The retension of retro-viral insertions (and we know they are retained rather than reinfections because they are observed in exactly the same place in the genome in cases of inheritance) in chimpanzees and humans, for example, demonstrates that we evolved from a common ancestor. Since we are morphologically different from the chimps, it follows that both of our populations have diverged - they have changed over time.

The only mechanism that can really account for this decent with modification is mutation and natural selection, unless you know otherwise?

2) Human chromosome 2 - shows very good evidence of being derived from two chromosomes still seperate in modern apes. This, again, indicates common ancestry and therefore, as above, mutation and selection.

Your go.

"Actually, leeching was moderately controversial all the time.

Also, note that we have *MUCH* better tools than we did then.
"

Umm..not really, it was an accepted practice. Umm..we have better tools? well, in context of what?)

I know this is going back a bunch of pages, but I'd just like to note that Leeches are actually still used in modern hospitals. I don't recall exactly what they are used for, I think it has something to do with limiting infection and bleeding of a deep cut. My mom used to work in the emergency room of a hospital in Connecticut, and they would use leeches every once in a blue moon.

Edit to add: I just noticed that this thread is 2 years old! Seriously, why do people ressurect threads that are this old?

considering evolution isn't believed by people in the scientific community, I'd say she has a right to her opinion and didn't seem to want to prove anything. Do you believe in God? There's just as much evidence for him..and I would also point to ocks razor on evolution..lightning strikes maybe once..but 1000000 times in the same place? Nope...
Louis, go to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi and enter "evolution" as your search term. You will get over 160,000 articles to read!

Now, the creationism community can get 100 scientists who oppose evolution. But there are over 700 scientists named Steve that accept evolution. That gives you some idea of what a minority your "people in the scientific community" is. They are less than 0.001% of the community. I bet you can find more satanists than that.

Evolution is not atheism.

Finally, the argument about Occam's Razor doesn't work, because there is no multiplying of entities. Also, evolution is not chance. The selection in natural selection is the opposite of chance.

Because the world and plants and animals look exactly like they should if evolution by natural selection were true. In contrast, plants and animals do not look like they should if species were formed by special creation.

You accept evolution for the same reasons that you accept gravity: the evidence is overwhelming and leaves you no choice.
