for Jesus and reason to believe scripture as infalliable.

They used to say that the Hittites didn't exist either, untill they found them in Turkey and so on. You can't find all the evidence in this world because lost ruins eventually become tomorrow's dirt pile, life is life, faith is faith, and people are people.the historical documents that coincide and the Holy Bible? Antiquities of the Jews book # 18 ch #3 paragraph 3, Correlius Tacitus in 115 ad book #15 ch #44 of the annals (during nero's time and destruction of Edom and its captital) Petra. Archaeological examples besides Hitties being discovered as real people...Persia 538 b.c. Assyrian Empire, Palestine, Egyypt wall of Karnak, King Hezekiah, Thebes, 1993 Galilee "House of David," the city of UR, Jericho, Nineveh, Bessemer Hiram, Abraham, 10 tribe kingdom, ashurbanipal palace, Hazor, Gaash, Capernaum and Silogoam, Nahman Avigad YZBL seal. Basically you can only carbon 14 date something for so long and lost ruins eventually become tomorrow's dirt pile. Just having 70 or 70,000 men of an army on something that wasn't sure if it was rubbed off. 20,000 manuscripts over spans of like 400 years flawlessly. He had witnesses and these witnessed believed to the point of matyrdom. Can you list more or add to?

Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, the director of the British Museum, one of the most respected New Testament textual scholar in the world in our century. He concluded that the present text in our Bible is absolutely reliable after a professional lifetime of in-depth review of all the NT manuscripts. He says what we have in our possession is the veritable Word of God.

For a variety of reasons, there is a lot of evidence for what Jesus said, did, and thought, but I think there is very little evidence for the Bible being infallible. You can't reason your way into accepting something like infallibility.

Yeah, nothing of this world is infallible.

The Bible is indeed of some use as evidence in the work of professional historians. However, in the work of historians, biblical evidence is subjected to the same sorts of analysis to which evidence from other ancient sources is subjected.

The question of whether or not the Bible is infallible is a theological one, not an historical one, and belongs in the Scripture forum rather than the History forum

I believe the bible is. It has standed the test over times and the people where martyred for it. All I stated above is even more reason to believe.

It fails at answering a lot of rudimentary scientific questions. As a piece of literature it has "stood the test of time," but as for its content as fact, there is overwhelming evidence against it.

If anything history confirms the Bible's prophecies and long before Newton was hit in the head with an apple the Laws of nature and science were acknowledged in the Bible- we are only discovering now how accurate the Bible really was

The Bible is not a science textbook and was never intended to be by its authors.

In Christ,

REGARDING THE ATTEMPT TO REST OUR WITNESS OF JESUS ON THE SPECIFIC CLAIM THAT THE “BIBLE” IS INFALLIBLE

Sri claimed in post #1 “20,000 manuscripts over spans of like 400 years flawlessly”
Jacob’s well claimed in post #2 “Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, ....concluded that the present text in our Bible is absolutely reliable after a professional lifetime of in-depth review of all the NT manuscripts.”
While I certainly believe that Jesus is the redeemer and the savior whose gospel, all mankind must eventually accept and live in order to achieve eternal happiness, I am concerned that completely frivolous claims do more harm to the christian claim than the good (which their proponents are most often seeking to do.)

When we, as christians, make spurious claims such as infallibility in the biblical text, invariably we are going to meet an investigator of christianity who is going to ask “which text is infallible?” and when we claim 20,000 manuscripts are transmitted “flawlessly”, they are going to ask us to name even a single greek manuscript that matches even one other greek manuscript. If we are honest, we are going to have to admit that we don't know of an infallible greek text; nor do we know of a single manuscript out of thousands, that is known to match another manuscript and that variations between greek manuscripts increase, the older the manuscript is.

The claim that Kenyon (or anyone else) has reviewed all the New Testament manuscripts falls apart if anyone looks at the claim closely. No one has ever done this. There is not a single critical text that has done this.

The Nestle-Aland critical text for example, will reference the variations between the great 4th and 5th century uncials (sinaiticus, alexandrinus, vaticanus, ephraimi - a rescriptus, bezae, etc) and then moves fairly quickly to “families” of textual variations and important papyri, but no one ever has, (even in the age of computers), reviewed “all the NT manuscripts”. The point is that nowadays, even the athiests understand these simple principles and love to tear apart and embarrass the core christian claim by showing that silly claims of infallibility are rubbish.

Jesus IS the christ. He IS the source of truth and salvation. But we need to be very, very careful that we do not make foolish claims since they only cause us christians embarrassment and loss of credibility when they are shown to be false claims.

Sri and Jacob’s well. Please do not be offended, No offense is intended. I think I probably made similar types claims when I was younger and trying to offer evidence for the Christian claim. However, Kaitlin and others are giving you good direction on this very specific issue.

I believe that there is wonderful personal evidences for the authentic chrisitian claim, but they are NOT based on textual “infallibility”.
