  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everyone,
I've been mulling over this for a while and I am sorry if I cause anyone to stumble by proposing this.

"Everything is permissible for me"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"--but I will not be mastered by anything.
1 Corinthians 6:12

I've been living in fearful panic for months now because I felt condemned for my sins even though I have been christian for all my life.

None is righteous, no, not one;
Romans 3:10

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlerswill inherit the kingdom of God.11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
1 corinthians 6:9-11

The new testament is full of condemnation it seems! Just after telling us that our sins are washed away, we are told to sin no more and that wicked people shall not inhert the kingdom. Multiple times paul, james and the others tell the people of the church to no longer live in sin or god will still destroy them.
But is this not an issue? Jesus came to save everyone from the impossible standards of the law but now we must live up to another standard? This cannot be!

But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
Matthew 5:22

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Matthew 5:27-28

To even be near a sin is a grievous sin. And this is just two examples. How wretched must we all be if i cant move a muscle without breaking gods law. Everything is a sin it seems. Just read Leviticus, if you are wearing a shirt with a cotton-polyester blend you are sinning. To have a tattoo is sin. When it is a woman's time of the month it is a sin if not handled properly.(Paul addresses this. By Jesus dying he has set us free from the law of moses. phew. Regardless of what you and I believe I hope we can agree on this)

in any case. We can't escape sin no matter what we do. Unless I sit in a pitch-black locked room chained to a bed, never thinking, never moving, I am sin.
But this is where it comes full circle

Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial should be taken at face value.

If we can lose our salvation by remaining in sin. We are all still lost.

Paul tells us what should seem obvious then. Jesus died to take away the sins of the world. All it takes to be saved is to believe that he has done this. What we consider to be sin is sin no longer.

Sins like adultery were meant to protect people and children from the damaging effects of our powerful sexual desires (which god created and said "it is good")

Honor your mother and father was likewise commanded for us with the promise that we might have joy for doing it.
When we ignore these commands we hurt not just god, but ourselves and other people too.

Everything is permissible, but obviously not everything (sin) is beneficial

Also worth mentioning. Paul mentions in the next two chapters of corinthians about all the rights that we have and how we are free but we shouldnt use our freedoms to cause others to stumble.

What does everyone think of this?

We all stumble in some points. None of us are perfect. However we should be attempting to move away from sin. We should not just say, "it is too hard, I will stay in it".

Jesus said in the bible "pray that you enter not into temptation for the flesh is weak, but the spirit willing". What that means is that left to our selves we gravitate towards sin. But if we spend constant time in prayer, daily prayer, the Holy Spirit will begin to change and fill us with His strength. Relationship with God keeps us free from the grip of sin. Also the Holy Spirit will fill you with love, joy, and peace, so your mental attitude will improve.

Seek God, try to leave sin behind.

What does everyone think of this?
I believe that there is way too much focus on sin. No, I do not advocate any kind of moral free for all. Sin is sin and hinders our walk with God. However, if we really know our co-death with Christ then sin is not a big issue. We died to sin. it no longer has any power over us. Why obsess over something that no longer controls us?

We also can live in apparent holiness and still not be obeying God. It's not just a matter of keeping out of trouble. We need to be obeying God's direction in our lives. Some Christians are paralysed because they are so afraid of failure. It's one reason that the church is so weak. It's "safer" to let the leadership do all the work instead of the church functioning as the body.

Let's turn things around. Focusing on sin is back to front. We do not become good Christians that way. Rather we discover who we are in Christ. Then we not only know what sin is, we know that we have victory over sin.

Ask God to open our eyes. We are new creations. Sin is paid for. We have the indwelling Holy Spirit, the Life of Christ, to both motivate and enable us to do God's will. Our conscience tells us what to avoid. Intuition is where we receive revelation and guidance.

You cannot lose that which you never had in the first place.

In Context:
1Jn 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
1Jn 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
1Jn 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
1Jn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
1Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
1Jn 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

First off, Paul writes this with the freedom from the Law in mind for those who have ceded their lives over to God.
Sinners are still living under the Law, "for by the Law is the knowledge of sin." (Rom 3:20)
Real Christians have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. (Gal 5:24)
They walk in the Spirit instead of in the flesh. (Rom 8:1)
They don't commit sin.

I've been living in fearful panic for months now because I felt condemned for my sins even though I have been christian for all my life.
Then quit committing sin!
That is what a real repentance from sin accomplishes.
Those who do "turn from sin" receive the gift of the Holy Ghost so we can always resist temptation. (Acts 2:38)
Remember, it is written..."There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1 Cor 10:13)
he Holy Ghost helps us find the escapes.

None is righteous, no, not one;
Romans 3:10
This is an OT scripture used by Paul to show the Jews that even those keeping the Law were still in need of a Savior.
He writes a little later..."But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe:" (Rom 3:21-22)
Verse 10 and 21-22 are a sort of before and after scenario in Paul's Rom 3 message.
Man cannot use verse 10 to continue on as slaves to sin.

Multiple times paul, james and the others tell the people of the church to no longer live in sin or god will still destroy them.
But is this not an issue? Jesus came to save everyone from the impossible standards of the law but now we must live up to another standard? This cannot be!
He also made the way to live by the "new standard" you mention.
His standard is this...Love God above all else and love your neighbor as you love yourself.
Men that love Him above all else have no problem loving their neighbors too.

To even be near a sin is a grievous sin.
Don't confuse temptation with sin.
Christians are empowered to resist every temptation.
James writes..."Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)
It is true !!

in any case. We can't escape sin no matter what we do.
You must have missed John 8:32-34...
32 "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin."
The truth can free us from service to sin.
Paul writes..."For he that is dead is freed from sin." (Rom 6:7)

Don't remain in sin.
As Peter said..."Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.". (Acts 2:38)
We can quit committing sin, and we can have our past sins washed away by the blood of Christ.
The results?
Ex-sinners filled with the Holy Ghost.

Yes, we need to live up to another standard. No, we don't do so legalistically. Reading the New Testament at length, sin is often talked about as part of the realm of death that Jesus pulled us out of. When we consider what Jesus did for us with his death and resurrection, and when we consider being born again by the Holy Spirit, and that God has given us a new identity in him, sin is rightly described as being very out of place in our lives. It almost doesn't make sense to sin, when you look at all that theology. But there's also this recognition that those who God has saved, and awakened to new life, are not yet perfect in practice. Yes, we have to live according to God's standard for us as best as we can. It is to be done out of gratitude for what he has done for us, even though it can be hard. And when we fall short, we repent, and do what we can to do better.

Matthew 5:27-28

That just makes the Good News better.

Everything is a sin it seems. Just read Leviticus, if you are wearing a shirt with a cotton-polyester blend you are sinning. To have a tattoo is sin. When it is a woman's time of the month it is a sin if not handled properly.(Paul addresses this. By Jesus dying he has set us free from the law of moses. phew. Yes, many OT laws do not apply to most Christians. Those of Jewish descent seem to have more of the Law to follow, though not all of it (i.e. sacrifices). Those not of Jewish descent never had to follow many of the Jewish laws.

Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial should be taken at face value.
Paul was simply answering rhetoric that certain Corinthians would use to justify their sinful sexual behavior when he wrote that.

"All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"--and God will destroy both one and the other.

If we can lose our salvation by remaining in sin. We are all still lost.
Good thing that perserverance of the saints is a thing.

Kinda makes me think of a joke/story not sure what it counts as of a conversation between a Christian and a bhudist.

The Christain talks about how there are set sins, and some things are allowed, and other things arn't. ANd the bhudist says, "All things are allowed." to which the Christian looks agast, "Do you really mean that? So I could punch you right now and thats allowed?" to which the bhudist says, "yes that is allowed, and I'm allowed to have you charged and arrested for assault." makes me think of this a bit, we are allowed to do what ever we want, but some things allow others to bring consequences.

John's First Epistle is such a balm of relevant and helpful doctrine that can give the believer much assurance through faith in the Person and Work poof the Son of God.
