• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Has anyone here ever used Anafranil safely, with good results? How about inositol?

I am ready to throw in the towel with SSRIs. They cause me more suffering than they solve.

Ever gotten help from an OCD support group; or do the other people there just inadvertently end up giving you new ideas to obsess about?

Here is a good website I found about the side effects of Anafranil:

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/clomipr_ad.htm

...just in case you were wondering?!?!

I think support groups can be a great way of discussing feelings between people who have similar problems. Many people can feel isolated in their sufferings and feel that there is no one who truly understands...I think support groups are a great way of showing us that there are others who struggle with the same problems and can offer new ways of coping or words of comfort!

If you don't mind me asking...what problem did you have with SSRI's? Were they just not helping you?

Praying for you to find the help you need!:prayer:

Thanks for the link! And for the prayers.

I can't tolerate SSRIs, even at the lowest doses, because they give me agitation and leg akathisia. They do help me, but at a cost that makes them little more than a magician's gimmicked choice- choose the untreated OCD, or choose adverse-reaction torment.

I'd happily use Anafranil, except that I have high blood pressure, migraines, and myoclonus. I would be a sitting duck for either a grand mal seizure, or, worse yet, a coronary!

I found a study saying that Topamax was found to be helpful for OCD. I really wish I could find a shrink who wasn't so inflexibly closed to trying an off-label treatment like this. I've already taken Topamax, perfectly safely and well-tolerated, for migraines.

Right now, I use omega fish oils, a temporary one-week supply of Klonopin, and am interested in trying inositol.

Thank you so much for the prayers!

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who gets the leg problems and agitation with SSRIs. I tried Lexapro once and at 10 mg my body was banging on the floor for two days.

So far I'm okay on Zoloft (there is noticeable agitation, but not so bad that I can't withstand it or can't drive) at 150 mg, although I have gone down to 125 because I was hoping to allay the agitation a bit.

Do the omega fish oils help? I should look at remembering them as a supplement.

Wow, seriously? I thought it was just me!

I just started the omegas, so, we'll see. I'm currently trying to get my doctor to give off-label Topamax (proven somewhat good for OCD in a Canadian study) a whirl.

Anyway, will PM you in a sec. :)

Right on. My doctors all thought I was a bit off-kilter saying I was getting those problems with the SSRIs I think, but I knew it was happening. The agitation now flares up from time to time, but it hasn't caused any issues in a few months, thankfully.

I'm actually planning on starting inositol soon, for just that reason.

The doctor thought my bad reactions to SSRIs were just more obsessions. Oh, if only that were the case...

My battle plan is currently: get onto inositol, do the fish oils, hit an OCF-sponsored support group, do the workbook on my own, and start getting way the heck more exercise.

I'm through with prescription meds I can't handle.

Hi, just noticed you were going to use the fish oils. My daughter just tried some of the fish oils, she has OCD as well as tourettes and has found that it made her tourettes awful "can't sit still at all". We have been doing a bit of reading on the subject and have found that it can be a side effect with fish oil and you are better to use either Flax seed oil, (make sure it is cold pressed and 100% Flax seed oil with natural occurring omega 3 PLANT OIL) also Primrose oil has proved to be better, but you do have to watch if you are on medication as these oils can react. Hope you don't think I am being a know-all but it has been awful for my daughter.

Amishparadise,

I am actually starting on Inositol right now. Read up on it and started taking about 2 grams Inositol powder a day. From what I've read I need to gradually up the dose over a month's time. I am hoping and praying for major symptom relief. Will let you know.

Take care.
