I've always had trouble sleeping and due to stress/work/school, the past year has been awful. I probably averaged 3-4 hours of sleep a night over the past year, and I haven't had a full 8 hours of undisturbed sleep since december after I worked a double shift with bronchitis and then finally passed out for 12 hours. In Jan I started 3rd shift to accomodate some with my classes, and of course that messed things up further. I'm now out of school for summer and working 3rd shift 5-6 nights a week now.
I've been in and out of the doctor the past year, and I've been on otc medicines, Klonopin, Lunesta, Xanax, and Restoril. Nothing really helps and I do not like having to take sleeping pills. As soon as I lie down to sleep, my mind won't shut down. I've been advised to take melatonin, but is it supposed to be taken every night? And is it safe long term?
