  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ever lie?

I find myself lying almost daily. Not really about big things, sometimes it might be an exaggeration or a lie to cover something personal about me which I do not want people to know. For example I lied last night as I was late meeting someone, it was partly because of my dog, but mostly because I did not get ready in time, though I blamed it on the dog. I dont normally lie about things that would hurt people, but more "white lies" I guess.

I was wondering if anyone here might have the same problem with exaggerating sometimes or sometimes telling "white lies" and how they achieved not lying anymore or maybe only lying once a month.

I know Jesus forgives and we arnt perfect, but if I lie once am I not considered a liar? Kind of like someone that cheats on their partner being considered a adulterer.

I have this problem too, and it's less than it was before, although it's started to come back again. I think all you can really do is practise not lying... if a situation comes along and you realise you're about to tell a lie, then stop yourself and try and tell the truth. If your mouth is working faster than your brain, which happens to me, too, then try and amend what you said after you've said it. Most importantly, pray for God to help you achieve this.

God bless! :)

Thanks for the responses and prayers :)

I know what you mean about the mouth working faster than the brain, maybe that is why some people do oaths of silence ;)

I made a big topic about this here you might enjoy:
http://www.christianforums.com/t7643711/

But either way we all have lied in life, small or big. Even white lies. I to catch myself sometimes using white lies or protective lies. Even making up stories to help someone. A lie is a lie and a sin either way and I am guilty of it. I honestly believe most are, but as said in my topic most don't tend to realize they are lying because it becoes normal almost until someone points it out.

I lie when my friends know it is a lie. All my friends do, but we keep up external appearances.

It isn't a lie in such a case.

It is just cover. Often sarcasm. Or just joking around.

There is also negative psychology aspect of sarcasm...

I have a idea. When you go to tell a lie pretend that God is standing there with you and you are telling it to him.

This works for me. Every time.

I lied again yesterday and caught myself doing it, but it was too late when I did it.

Went for a bike ride and someone asked me about my place, I lied to where it was.

I know I could justify it for safety, but I guess it is still a lie.

Maybe next time you should just say you'd rather not tell them? That would be honest, and they probably would be understanding. One of the problems I have in this (not saying you have the same, but it's possible) is that I don't want people to think I'm strange. If someone asked me where I lived, I may well tell a lie because I'd think it weird to say I'd rather not tell them. I don't know if that's why you do it, but I think that's why I do it, but even if one person thinks I'm weird, it doesn't matter, because it will please God more if I tell the truth.

Stay strong - you'll probably find that you'll start lying less and less in time.

Thanks, good advice.
