I've been blessed with an iron gut most of my life, but Monday night I had some crab dip that had sat out too long at work and spent the next twelve hours the sickest I have ever been in my life.

Missed a complete shift at work but managed to rally and go to work yesterday, albeit weak and pretty much useless. Today I woke up, felt pretty good, had a bunch of coffee, then went for a walk downtown to a little cafe and had a chicken sandwich. Have not felt good since.

How long do the effects typically linger??

Yes, once. It was at a Chinese place. They had some of the best fried rice in town. I should have known better though. One night I found a dead roach in the plate. The next time I got food poisoning.

Wow.. why would you eat there again after that first experience? Lol.

The fried rice, man. It was to die for. But after that food poisoning, I would have said it was to kill for. Or at least an excuse for a tossed brick to bust out a storefront window.

O. M. G... YES! And it is on of THE STUPIDEST thing I had done ever. back in 2012, I forgot that I bought some loaf bread which was in the cupboard for maybe 3days? it's super hot in laguna and that caused it to have molds. so when I did remember about it, I felt awful that i had to throw it out when so many people were starving in the world. i thought "what a waste."
So, I showed it to my aunt and she told me "you can still save that. Remove the moldy parts and bake it in the oven" which I did, trusting that she wouldn't tell me to save it if she hadn't done it before...
so yeah, I barely ate 1piece coz I still couldn't forget the molds earlier. But a tiny nibble was all it took to land me on the hospital for a week. worst part of the whole thing was, my then 2yr old daughter had taken a nibble as well (i still don't know HOW she was able to sneak a bite) so we were both hospitalised for food poisoning. it was a horribly painful experience. i was suffering the whole night before i finally begged to be be brought to the doctor.

lesson learned - do NOT regret throwing food that smells or looks funny, no matter how hungry or desperate you are to keep it from going to waste. we ended up spendong around 16,000pesos in hospital fees for trying not to waste a loaf that probably cost 20 pesos.

I'm honestly surprised I've never had food poisoning yet. Considering I have no taste of smell. Sometimes I wonder if something is questionable yet can't sniff it.. and if no one is nearby I just had to take the risk blind, lol.

I think I got it once in Mexico. Likely from some cake for a kindergarten graduation party. It lasted for a few days. The worst thing was I couldn't enjoy eating cheese when I was sick. :(
That's the only time I've ever gotten it in Mexico though.

a year ago, i ate some dinner and i felt very very sick. I think it's because the chicken was left out too long, before being cooked. my head hurt a lot. spent most of the day in bed. then i went to eat leftovers the next night, and i got sick again. that's when i got suspicious about the dinner. and i found out that i wasn't the only person feeling a bit sick, after eating the dinner. so i stopped eating it, which sucked because it was the only food i could have at the time, as i can't cook . . .

I've never had food poisoning, but I've had several stomach bugs in my life. I was hospitalized once for dehydration, and the last one I had (this past winter in fact) my doctor was like "Are sure you don't need to go to the ER to get fluids", but I was keeping water down at the time. In my experience, I'm not really back to my normal diet until about day 3-4.

yes I have and a few times. It is not fun, you think you are about to die ( or want to ). It does not last real long, as you now know. Normally 12-24 hours. It has made me more aware of food storage, etc. I will throw things out now if there is a chance of getting sick. This thread may be a benefit to me and others because this has not happened to me in sometime. When that happens, one tends to let their guard down.
Anyway, glad you are better now ( as I munch on re heated chinese food from earlier today ).

I got it when I was 11 after going on a field trip which included eating food that was cooked by kids my age.

The effects started in the evening, and I was pretty miserable for a couple of hours. But I was fine to go to school the next morning.

I rarely get it either, so it is pretty frustrating if and when it does come. Sorry you're dealing with that mate.

Food poisoning, illness, usually I manage to duck those kinds of problems but it has hit me before. I've only had it a couple of times but it's ranged from a few hours to a few days. One episode I had knocked me out for a whole weekend and then some. I didn't even want to move, I just slept constantly.

The important thing is to try to consume fluids, and be aware of dehydration. I'm still not fully clear whether it was food poisoning or the Norovirus that was going around, but a few years ago I was so sick I had to be taken to a clinic where they gave me a Phenergan shot to make me stop vomiting. Weird, huh? I'd never had that happen before. They wanted to hook me up to an IV to get some fluids in me but I hate needles, so the shot was enough.

Anyway, I know it's hard to keep stuff down when you have food poisoning, so just stay hydrated - even if it's just consuming some ice chips as often as possible. If you're not having a problem keeping fluids down pump some Gatorade into your system, it's good to get some electrolytes in you and could give you a slight boost in your recovery. If I'm coming off any kind of stomach bug Gatorade is my saving grace.

Gatorade also works wonders to stave off a hangover, so chug some after a night of heavy drinking. ...That's just a bonus PSA.

I'm sorry you're being afflicted by food poisoning. My family and I always used excessive caution to avoid it while traveling, only for me to become severely ill due to a salad from a nice restaurant near my grandparents in Cleveland. I was hospitalized for it, but that was primarily because of underlying health issues that made it far more severe. Most people can wade it out without needing medical intervention, and are fully recovered within a week.

If you've been through gastrointestinal grief, it's important to stay hydrated, but drinking too much plain water can actually be counterproductive and worsen your ordeal. You definitely do not want to guzzle liquids when your stomach is already volatile. Instead, suck on ice chips or take small sips of Gatorade or another sports drink, flat soft drink, mint tea, diluted apple or orange juice, watered down lemonade, water, or broth. Liquids that contain some sodium, potassium, and sugar can help to fend off hypoglycemia and help you to feel more functional when you haven't been able to eat properly in a while. You can get specially formulated electrolyte drinks from pharmacies (though most do not taste very appealing to me) but broth, Gatorade, or juice can help, too. I get sick relatively often, so we keep ice cube trays filled with fruit juices in the freezer, and I suck on them. When I've been throwing up I usually have the fruit chips, or one tablespoon of a clear liquid every fifteen minutes or thereabouts whenever I'm awake.

I live on coffee, but it can be rough on your stomach when it's trying to recuperate. I'd avoid, or at least greatly reduce how much of it you drink until you're better. Easing back into eating might be helpful, too. I rarely eat solids if I'm sick, because it just makes me sicker. Instead I have vegetable broths, popsicles made only from juice, lemonade that isn't too sour, and diluted juice.

If you continue to feel unwell you might want to call your doctor or go to a walk-in clinic to see about antibiotics or an antiemetic. I hope you get better soon. :)

The effects can last for several weeks. The gut flora needs time to readjust, your T-cells will be pounding the beat and staying vigilant, and the overall trauma on the body will take some time to recover from.

Fluids have been lost (even if you down gallons of water now you're still days in deficit) and salts and trace minerals are low. I would strongly recommend against caffeine. It's a strong diuretic and is only going to draw water AWAY from your body. You want it IN. Isotonics yes, stimulats (as tempting as it may be) no.

I ate some dodgy food in Europe in the spring. I made the mistake of drinking two cans of Rockstar after I had chucked everything up and needed to travel back to the UK. Er... Yeah. Never again.

I don't puke much. Even with Norovirus I only had the one singular spell at the onset of the virus, and then spent the next 48 hours feeling as if I had swallowed cement. For some reason my body just doesn't want to vomit. It much prefers the other mode of transport.

Expect aches, pains and muscle strains. That's all down to low salts.

By the way, my mother is a nurse. I had all of this information drummed into my brain from literally my first stomach virus lol.

@Stanfordella +1 on ice chips. That's what I usually do. That and small nibbles on crystalised ginger.
