  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Evensong is great if you have good/competent musicians and the person who leads it can sing. Any good liturgy is fine though there is something special about the BCP1662 service. If any of the above is lacking I think it is a miserable experience and would not bother. I was once asked to regularly run Evensong at a church. We were going to use a mix of the Australian prayer book & the BCP1662, the choir was good and the organist was one of the best I have ever seen. I cannot sing so I said no as it would have been abysmal.

My DD often sings Evensong at a nearby cathedral.

I'm always a bit disappointed that there is not much congregational singing, or even participation in the liturgy. I don't know if this is typical or peculiar.

That bummed me out too.

I'm going to my first choral evensong service at the cathedral this evening. It's something I've wanted to experience for years but never got around to doing.

Do you guys have any experience of evensong? What do you think?

It's awesome. I'm a big fan. My parish offers sung morning prayer and evensong from time to time, and I try to go whenever I can. Evensong really is one of the treasures of Anglicanism.
