ETERNAL GARDENS


The plastic flowers have no end.

They hope you feel you feel you know.

Oh how they lead you on my friend.


No need to water, we'll pretend

that the gardens growth is slow.

The plastic flowers have no end,


for all their faultless leaves contend

with watching only shadows grow.

Oh how they lead you on. My friend


walked on the roses since they don't bend

or break or have no friend or foe.

The plastic flowers have no end


in sight in fact it might extend

the "springs eternal hope" that they bestow,

Oh how they lead you on my friend.


Oh how they hardly try to blend

into the back-ground down below.

Oh how they lead you on my friend.

That's actually rather good. I'm sure there is lots of meaning in that.

This is a Villanelle. Certain lines repeat which cause them to tend to be a bit boringly repetitive but I believe I was the first person to use punctuation to alter the repeated lines to enhance the fixed style a bit. I've searched and can't find any older poems that use this punctuation trick. Started this in the early 90's.

I was at a restaurant eating breakfast and there was a display of fake flowers but they looked real from a distance and I wrote this poem about how they want to trick us into thinking they are real when they aren't. I suppose the whole world is trying to do the same.

It's an imaginary person who hasn't yet realized what I have....perhaps my pre-aware self but it could be anyone really.
