My position on the matter is that it's most certainly possible that there's extra-terrestrial life and that some of it may be intelligent. However, that's a long way from it being probable that there's intelligent life not from Earth. Sure, there's a lot of stars out there, and many of them could certainly host planets orbiting in the habitable zone. However, without better data on abiogenesis and the probability of intelligent life evolving, it's impossible to give odds on the matter. The Earth may very well be unique in the universe in its hosting of life. Or other planets may host life in abundance, but all of it's unicellular. Or we may be the first intelligent species to arise, and there are numerous other candidate species out there whose descendants will be intelligent. Or humans could be just one of millions of sapient species in our galaxy.
