Please try the ESV. The study Bible is great, is spite of its moderate Reformed/Calvinist footnotes. As a thorough-going Arminian, I recommend the translation, and I think I am informed enough to spot Reformed bias in the notes. However, I do believe the basic ESV translation is free of Calvinist/Reformed bias. It is a trustworthy translation, which is superior to the NIV (as a thought for thought translation) and the NASB (as a literal translation). The ESV is not easy on homosexuality. The ESV was done to improve a basically good translation-the RSV. The RSV was my first Bible from 1965-1985. After that I switched to the NIV, as some of the liberal bias of the RSV finally caused me to drop it. I am quite familiar with the old RSV and well as the NIV. Most of my commentaries are based on an NIV text, and that is fine. I just check notes and commentary with the Hebrew-Greek texts. The ESV will surpass the NIV and all other English translations as a competent faithful literal translation of God's inerrant Word- the Bible.

'The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.' ESV

'It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.' NASB

'Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.' NIV

Which of these is the best rendition of 1Ti 3:1?

well i got it saturday, had to go to 3 stores to find one cheap enough. one wanted 60,000 (a christian book store) and a secular one wanted just over 8,000.

i do not care for the commentary or the notes that much and if there is a conflict i can go to credible sources to check it out.

I'm sorry, but if you paid 8,000 for it you got ripped! I paid 15 for mine, I think. :p
