Longer life usually requires lifestyle changes. The doctor can just buy you a little time but then you have to make good use of the time your given. Also, intervention by doctors in those with disease, is the leading cause of controlling one's disease and living a longer life.
The leading cause of death is from Coronary heart disease. According to Dr Ornish this disease can be reversed though diet, exercise and stress control (relaxation meditation). They are finding other diseases like some forms of cancer respond to this approach also. Research is going into finding a treatment for cancer along the lines of preventing and reversing heart disease.Serious disease requires more than lifestyle changes, if one is going to extend their life and live somewhat of a quality life.

A healthy lifestyle can lower the risk of CHD. If you already have CHD, a healthy lifestyle may prevent it from getting worse. A healthy lifestyle includes:
- Following a healthy diet
- Being physically active
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Quitting smoking
- Managing stress

People with a 99% blockage are taken straight to surgery. Most hospitals can get them to surgery within 90 minutes of when they enter the hospital. The heart doctors are instantly ready to operate. Then as a part of their recovery from surgery they are sent to rehab where they are taught how to eat properly and exercise. If they follow their diet then they will not need any more surgery. If they do not follow the diet their surgery will not do much to help them. The condition could come right back again. The surgery does not solve the problem, it buys them time to get on a program of diet and exercise that will resolve the issue. Some people are very aggressive with the program. Some do not participate at all. Most people do enough to improve their health and add years to their life but not as much as they could do to improve their situation. Half the people show up for rehab, half of the people that show up follow though with the program after they graduate.Tell that to the people who have 99% blockage of a major artery in their heart and they are going to roll the dice and bank on lifestyle choices (which take substantial time and discipline) to have any impact and hope in the meantime, the blockage does not become 100% occluded.

I have an advanced degree in cardiovascular physiology and have worked with people in cardiac rehab settings, so I know a little about this topic.
The reality is, modern cardiovascular interventions, have kept plenty of people alive because of the interventions, when they otherwise would have succumbed to the disease. Once the disease has advanced to a high degree, multiple surgical interventions may be necessary to keep them alive, even when lifestyle changes have taken place.
Then I am sure you know how effective the Ornish program is for reversing heart disease. Of course you are trained that everything is effective and the patient is to follow the advise of their doctor and the associated professionals.
If people followed the program they would not have coronary heart disease in the first place so they would not need any help in that regard. Of course we have known this for a long time and Americans do not seem to want to follow a diet & livestyle that would help prevent this problem. In 1913, a study by Nikolai Anitschkow showed that rabbits fed on cholesterol developed lesions in their arteries similar to atherosclerosis, suggesting a role for cholesterol in atherogenesis.[8][9] By 1951, it was accepted that, although the causes of atheroma were still unknown, fat deposition was a major feature of the disease process. "The so-called fatty flecks or streaks of arteries are the early lesions of atherosclerosis and... may develop into the more advanced lesions of the disease.[10]The Ornish program is not the first option for those with significant disease and plenty of people have significant disease and require surgical intervention, to remain alive.
If you can't get this reality, I can't help you.

Isa 65 20 "Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; the one who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere child; the one who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed."Lifestyle changes are all well and good, but they don't protect everyone. There is this thing called; genetic predisposition, that tends to rear it's ugly head, no matter what the lifestyle is.
I will say again, without modern surgical intervention, many more people would die much younger of heart disease. You don't seem to accept this reality and that is your choice.

We are told that there is a time coming when people will live to be 100. Now people live to be around 80. So there will be a time when people will eat right and they will reap the benefits of that. We know more today about eating healthy food then we ever did in the past.

Drug companies do not care about saving lives all they care about is making money.Or the increased life span may come from a pill we haven't discovered yet. Sure, a healthy life style is great, but why do you keep on discounting the results of medical intervention? That saves lives and extends life as well.
People with a genetic predisposition all the more need to follow the right diet plan so as to hinder those genes from expressing themselves. This is not only true for diet and disease but also for behavior issues. For example there could very well be a genetic predisposition for some criminal behavior. Environment then plays a huge roll to regulate if those genes are expressed or if they are hindered from being expressed.Lifestyle changes are all well and good, but they don't protect everyone. Now your talking about the doctors not the drug companys. The doctors want to avoid malpractice law suits because that can put them out of business, so that is their main priority. If they lose their insurance then they lose their privilege to practice medicine in that hospital. The insurance company has the most to gain when people are healthy.Would this mean, if someone shows up in the emergency room and they are having a heart attack, the patient shouldn't be given clot busting drugs, that can prevent damage to the heart tissue and save the person's life?
The surgery buys them time to make the changes they need to make. When that person shows up in the emergency room with chest pain and they discover they have a blockage issue in a major cardiac artery, would you send them home with instructions on how to eat right and hope that blockage doesn't kill them in the meantime?
No one is denying the importance of lifestyle on health, but you appear to be denying the importance of medical and surgical intervention in saving people's lives and extending them.
