I don't mind those statues too much - I had seen them a few months back in a magazine.
I do think the statues lend themselves a bit to the idea that Jesus is our "buddy" who is always smiling and patting the heads of children and I am not a big fan of that sort of theology. I do not think that sort of thinking is entirely wrong, but it does have dangerous risks inherent to it.
My sentiments exactly.debiwebi said:well i guess my first reaction was WHAT!?!
Then I read the thread through and it is still WHAT!?!
Tasteless? I agree.Matrona said:Tasteless, but harmless.
NO I wouldn't say so and i would agree completely. Like I said before in taking away His Divinity we essentially make Him the same as us and He is not He is God. To encourage people to relate to Him in this way I think encourages them to have less respect for who He truly is and everything that He represents.nyj said:Tasteless? I agree.
Harmless? I disagree. If these sorts of things mask Jesus' divinity (an action figure? Oy!) then I think they would indeed be harmful. For instance, just look at icons written of Jesus Christ. They take great care to emphasize not only His humanity, but also His divinity. These sorts of statues, IMO, de-emphasize His divinity, intentional or not.
Then again, perhaps I'm an alarmist.

That's true.nyj said:If these sorts of things mask Jesus' divinity (an action figure? Oy!) then I think they would indeed be harmful. For instance, just look at icons written of Jesus Christ. I do take myself less seriously I just don't take God less seriously nor would I ever. but that is just me of course.Cathologetics said:Sometime we need to take ourselves a little less serious. I think they are cool. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I guess so is irreverence.
You are right - Jesus being by our side in sickness/injury and death is more appropriate than playing golf or hockey. I do not like the whole sports motif. Sports is a game. Other things are real life.Wolseley said:Personally, I think they're silly. I understand what they're trying to convey, but there are better ways to get the point across, I think.
A couple of similar statues, but much less silly, and which conveyed the same type of message much more effectively, were a two I saw in a catalogue once; one showed a little boy with his leg in a cast and a pair of crutches...Jesus was standing behind him with a steadying hand on his shoulder, making sure the kid didn't fall. The other one, which was much more touching, to me at least, showed a little boy kneeling near a gravestone marked "Spotty"; there was a dog dish and a chew bone nearby. The little boy was crying, and Jesus was kneeling beside him with His arms around him.
If the idea is to convey that Jesus is your Friend and that He's there for you, those two do a much better job of doing it respectfully than the sports statues, in my humble opinion.
