Post-Super Bowl, Bare Breasts on 'ER' Raise Alarm

Only days after the firestorm created when Janet Jackson exposed her breast during the Super Bowl, the possibility to air an episode of "ER" on NBC Thursday evening that includes a view of an elderly female patient's bare breast are raising serious concerns among the network's affiliates.

Some NBC affiliates are so uneasy about the prospect of that scene airing on the first night of sweeps that at least one station group executive described himself Tuesday as "considering what my options are" should NBC decide to air the hour with the exposed breast. "You're not going to find the stations very willing to take the heat," said the station group executive. "I think people are going to be backing off big-time."

NBC had no comment at presstime but is aware of the potential for some affiliates to refuse to air the episode. Senior network executives had screened the scene for members of the NBC affiliates advisory board during a Las Vegas meeting held in conjunction with NATPE in mid-January.

At the time, affiliates expressed what were described as "concerns" about the scene and whether it is, even if done in good taste, essential to the drama, but no final decision was reached. After the board discussion, some affiliates had been told that award winning "ER" executive producer John Wells was unwilling to cut the scene.

Now many affiliates are even more concerned. The post-Super Bowl climate has every station owner feeling super sensitive.

There is a pending FCC investigation of the Super Bowl incident. Last week some stations were fined for earlier incidents and the White House endorsed a call for a ten-fold increase in fines for indecency on TV. There are already indecency hearings on Capitol Hill scheduled and more being threatened.

In light of the atmosphere of fear which has been created, even a tastefully shot, full-on glimpse of a bare breast in a network primetime show inspires less academic and more fearful discussions and concerns. That context led the group executive to predict that should NBC keep the breast scene in, there could be significant defections by affiliates who won't air the show.

John Wells was unavailable for comment.

IMO, this is stupid........Come on people! Has anyone ever watched NYPD Blue? What is up with all the paranoia here? I've seen more on TLC. Next thing you know, they'll be taking all those shows off the air b/c they show nudity - like giving birth to a child. This is just out of control in my opinion.

After all of the hype billiefan2000 gave the show I didn't know what to expect. Did anyone actually watch the show? I did - the doctors were trying to revive and old woman whose heart had stopped. The camera flashed past her open hospital gown, and the picture was pixellized anyway. Nobody saw anything. Whew! I'm glad the end of the world really isn't upon us (I wanted to stick around for a few more years). Sorry, billiefan, maybe next time you'll get your breats.

I saw it too. Now, if the pixilated stuff was all that was originally intended to be shown, this was definately much ado about nothing (well the whole thing was to being with). It was a quick split second shot which was already abscured by people moving around. I never would have even noticed it if it hadn't been for the pixilation.

What a great way to get people to watch it. The show probably wrote an article about how horrible it was that a tv show would have nippledge, then slipped it to the media

And everyone who decried it and said it's awful, only gave them more publicity.......

In all fairness, the 'Maternity Ward' show on TLC blurs out the woman's genitalia, and usually just shows the baby being born. On an interesting sidebar, seeing a child being born makes me come close to fainting...never going to watch a live birth or else I'll end up in ER too.

Maybe so many people are offended by people nude since it may take them back to the time where supposedly Adam and Eve coexisted nude...a time before the sin complex that bogs so many people down.

I hear you man. I consider myself "pro-feminist" and "progressive" and everything... but the one thing I think I would like to bring back is the idea that I get to smoke cigars in the waiting room rather than being in the delivery room... just kidding... sort of.

Peace.

Yeah, icky and ouchy don't begin to do it justice. That is why I did it like the good Goddess intended. Drugged and feelin no pain, slice n dice, take out the babe, and slapped on a band aid. It was fantastic. My maternity pics were so nice, hair not mussed up with makeup running down your face.....:pink:

I couldn't imagine what it was like having babies before modern medicine. I would have died in my first delivery...scary!!

go hug a doctor.

[sarcasm]Just the THOUGHT of that turns me on.[/sarcasm] :sigh:

If we really think that the exposed nipple of a dying 80 year old woman signifies the decline of Western civilization as we know it, then God help us all and Welcome to the Second Dark Ages. :prayer: :help:

There are two ways you can show bare breasts: In a sexual way and in a non-sexual way. Somehow I think that showing an elderly womans breast on ER is of the non-sexual type. Just a guess:)
You got it. Context is everything.

Even if it were a sexual context, what I completely fail to understand is we can show people getting killed, tortured, beaten to bloody pulps, crushed by cars, and called all kinds of nasty names (as long as they aren't one of the 7 forbidden words) on TV any time of day or night.

But show a couple of people loving each other and we are aghast.

How is that? Why is violence acceptable and affection such a taboo?

Maybe I should start a little thread on that.

Well it needs to be true love, not this sex-right-now junk that's on TV nowadays. Today's movies have virtually forgotten old-school romance. Bring those movies back, for they were some of the greatest movies ever made!
