Like any other group with a broad spectrum, liberal Episcopalians seem to tend Democratic quote strongly, conservative Episcopalians Republican fairly strongly as well -- with exceptions to that rule, to be sure.

I am sure that is probably the case but I just wanted to get an idea of what my fellow Episcopalians on CF believed. :)

Democrat. My faith informs my politics, and both my faith and politics have led me to TEC.

Although I'm not confirmed in the Church, I attend an Episcoal Church locally and consider myself an Episcopalian. I left the RCC for TEC about two years ago, don't plan on going back. :)

I would say that CF has a whole tends to trend Republican, and that particular websites tend to attract niche groups, so taking a survey at any individual website is probably not going to be an accurate cross-section of the denomination.

I would imagine, though, that it would be hard to be a Republican based strictly on social issues (which many of them, particularly in the southeast are) such as abortion or gay marriage considering the stance that Church has taken on both of these issues. If one was a Republican mostly because they consider themselves (and the Republican Party) to be "fiscal conservatives" then I'd imagine there would be no qualms about being both Republican and Episcopalian.

What stance has TEC taken on those issues?

What stance has TEC taken on those issues?

On Abortion: " In 1994, the 71st General Convention expressed "unequivocal opposition to any ... action ... that [would] abridge the right of a woman to reach an informed decision about the termination of her pregnancy, or that would limit the access of a woman to a safe means of acting upon her decision." In 1997, at the 72nd General Convention, the delegates approved a resolution that did not condemn partial-birth abortions but expressed grave concerns about the procedure, "except in extreme situations." "

Denominational stand of abortion

On Gay Marriage: obvious considering +Robinson and thew newly elected Mary Glasspool. I suppose this is not necessarily a show of support for gay "marriage", but rather lack of condemnation for homosexual lifestyles.

I am not formally Episcopalian, but it's as doctrinally close to what I believe as anything is, and I do attend Episcopal services occasionally. I generally vote Libertarian. If there is no Libertarian, I'm more likely to go Republican.

I think it is ridiculous to govern a country only one way (Conservative or Liberal) under all situations. It is way too inflexable.

For instance, during the depression we needed the "socialism" of the WPA in order to put displaced workers to work. However, socialism isn't always called for.

My hunch is that more Episcopalians are Democrats than Republicans, but there are plenty of Episcopalians who vote Republican despite the policies their leaders have adopted.

It's probably worth mentioning also that the OP inquired into the views of Episcopalians only, and probably half of the posters on this forum are members of other Anglican churches.

It is interesting how times have changed, before the Liberal stances on homosexuality and ordaining Women, the Espiscopalians were the "Country Club" Republicans.

Also called "the Republican Party at prayer." Now the church is seen by many as just the opposite, as one of America's premier liberal church bodies.

I have noticed that while the majority of Catholics now vote Republican, there used to be substantial numbers of American Catholics who were Democrats.

I find the American political scene a bit weird at times. But it is always a good thing to remember that it changes, and has changed in the lifetime of people who are still living. People seem to get really quite hardened into one side or the other.
