  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matrona posted this in another thread. I thought this might make for interesting discussion ...

If that blessed day comes, what patriarch will we be under?

I would like to see the Ecumenical Patriarchate move to New York City. It is the closest city of any on this earth that would fit the idea of a modern-day Rome. Not to mention, it would be a much safer and far less oppressive environment for the Patriarchate. Yes, I DO know I'm talking about New York City here, which I know is rarely described as "safer" than anything.

Do you think that if we did that, we could reorganize the American jurisdictions into one jurisdiction, directly under the EP?

Besides, the amount of control the Turkish government has on the EP is alarming. Didn't they kill the last one or something?

However, I don't want to leave the dwindling population of Christians in Turkey stranded--would absorbing them into the Church of Greece help things, you know, make it the Church of Greece and Turkey or something? Would that solve the property dispute going on between that Greek archbishop and the EP?

Forgive me if any of this sounds ignorant or idiotic. I am still learning.

I say move him to eastern Kentucky. It's invasion-safe, since nobody wants it and it's hundreds of miles from anything important. Lots of people there already have ZZ-Top beards, so he won't stick out that much. Plus, there's no Orthodox church in that whole region, so instead of planting a mission there we can plant the EP and a cathedral and kill two birds with one stone. I have some farm (using the term extremely loosely) land there that he can have, since the tax deduction would be more than the farm has made in ten years. Sound like a plan?

Tell you what, how about if we pack up a bunch of tourist brochures from New York, Honolulu, and eastern Kentucky (be sure to enclose an instruction booklet on how to pronounce "Louisville"), and see if any of them strike his fancy? The free land in Kentucky would give it a distinct advantage. :)

So this couple is driving through Kentucky on their way to somewhere else, and they decide to stop in Louisville for lunch. The husband tells his wife to be sure to pronounce it "Louieville" so as not to sound like a tourist, but the wife argues that real Kentuckians pronounce it "Lewisville." They argue for five minutes and finally they reach their pitstop and the husband says "I'll settle this, we'll ask the guy running the cash register. Excuse me sir, how do you pronounce the name of where we are right now?" The guy looks at him like he's crazy, and says "Bur-ger-King."

Maybe we could trade Turkey one of our cities in exchange for Constantinople. I would like to nominate San Fransisco and Provo.

I would gladly sign over the whole states of Utah and California to Turkey, in exchange for Constantinople. How will they get back and forth to occupy their new possessions? Maybe a giant Habitrail... :D
