  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does "Enduring to the End" mean?

In my younger years; I thought of enduring to the end; for the Lord Jesus; as: working in the ministry; that the Lord would give you power to do; till you either:
A:--died in the "traces" (harness for horses to plow) and was taken home in a preferably fiery chariot like Elijah:

"And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." 2 Kings 2:11

B:--was in the same ministry; that the Lord powered you through; and after a great and successful career; you retire to a nice retirement pension; with many friends and family patting you on the back for a great job done; and many years later you pass home to the lord in heaven; surrounded by the friends and family again.

Well; many years later I came across a few passages in the Bible that didn't sound that rosy:

1--And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:13 NKJV

2-- "And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved." Matthew 10:22

n our enthusiasm to promote God's Simple Plan of Salvation, we have made anathema any suggestion that the Scripture demands anything beyond the simple requirement to believe. "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?" (James 2:14). The desire to protect Gospel Salvation from the Judaizers, who wrongly made the keeping of the Ceremonial Law of the Old Testament necessary for Salvation-- "And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved" (Acts 15:1)-- has caused the Gospel requirement of persevering in faith, continuing in Christ, holding fast our confidence in Christ, or enduring to the end, to be laid aside from the claims of the Primitive Gospel. "We are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end" (Hebrews 3:14).

If the repentance that brings Salvation is solely the work of man, then we can glory in saving ourselves. But, it is not. Though repentance is a necessary condition of Salvation, men never do repent unless God grants it to them. "In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the Truth" (2Timothy 2:25). Similarly, if the faith that saves us is simply a demonstration of sheer human will power, then we can rightfully take credit for our own salvation. But, faith is not simply the product of man's will. Though man is commanded to believe on the LORD Jesus Christ in order to be saved, men will never believe without the Holy Spirit working it in them. "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure"(Philippians 2:13). Also,

  • "No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:44).

  • "...despisest thou the riches of His Goodness and Forbearance and Longsuffering; not knowing that the Goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?" (Romans 2:4),

  • "And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not"(Revelation 2:21).
Persevering to the end is part of Saving Faith; and therefore, it is a condition of Eternal Salvation. "And ye shall be hated of all men for My Name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved" (Mark 13:13). Holding fast our faith (or, "confidence") is the same as enduring. "But Christ as a Son over His own house; Whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end" (Hebrews 3:6). Continuing in the faith is not optional to those who will partake of the Saints' Inheritance. "12 Giving thanks unto the Father, Which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the Saints in Light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son: 14 In Whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins... 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the Gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under Heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister"(Colossians 1:12-14, 23).

Unfortunately, the misunderstanding of the nature of Gospel Faith has caused many in the Evangelical Community to adamantly maintain that Eternal Salvation is in opposition to any works, such as enduring to the end. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" (Titus 3:5). Truly, since any attempt to save ourselves (apart from turning in faith to the LORD Jesus Christ), is negatively, "works of righteousness which we have done", then those works must be rejected as Filthy Rags Righteousness. "We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away" (Isaiah 64:6). But, Gospel Faith cannot be separated from the works of faith, such as enduring to the end or overcoming the world. "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our Faith" (1John 5:4). And properly, all the works of faith are a part of and conditions for Gospel Salvation. "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith [the passive, intellectual perception of the Truth that even the devils have], and have not works? can faith [the antinomian belief that cries out against any works] save him? 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble" (James 2:14,19). Also,

  • "Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our LORD Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father" (1 Thessalonians 1:3), and

  • "Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faithwith Power" (2 Thessalonians 1:11).
The faith that believes that it is not necessary to endure to the end as a condition of Eternal Salvation prepares the Church for the Apostasy or Falling Away of the End Times. "1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the Coming of our LORD Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto Him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the Day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that Day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition" (2Thessalonians 2:1-3). A cardinal tenet of faith is: "According to your faith be it unto you" (Matthew 9:29). And, if we allow and prepare ourselves to fall away from the faith-- ever so briefly-- we will fall away! "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7).

Just the opposite is true for those who would "continue in the faith" (Colossians 1:23). Those who do not "give place to the devil" (Ephesians 4:27), will not grieve the Spirit by believing the lie that they may not cease to endure to the end. "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption" (4:30). Not only is it necessary for the Saints to endure or persevere to the end; but at the same time, both the Father and the Son have promised to preserve those who "continue in the faith". "28 And I give unto them Eternal Life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. 29 My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand" (John 10:28-29). This relationship where the Saints Endure While God Preserves was best expressed by the LORD Jesus: "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (John 5:17).

This is an excellent question and study. What comes to mind for me is something that is so profound that it sorta' summarizes it all to me, regarding enduring to the end. And that is what is written in Revelation and Jesus chastising a Church. What the Church was guilty of, is that they lost their "first love". It did not matter much what they did or didn't do after losing it. It seems the bottom line is that the "enduring" is loving God with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength, through the power of God's Holy Spirit within us and Jesus' inexplicable grace. What comes to mind for me, is that if we love God this way, everything else falls into place.

God bless you my friend. This has been very edifying to read and ponder on.

What if you are: loving God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength; and things around you are falling apart; your country is becoming something you no longer recognize; your body is falling apart; your friends and loved ones are dead or dying; the sky is filled with smoke and ashes falling out of it; you live most of the time in an AC cocoon because the weather has changed. Such a valuable message we all need.

I was reminded also of a key, central passage on this not in that good article, but also crucial to know and do --

How to endure inevitable storms, He said --

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” -- Christ, our Lord, in Matthew chapter 7

 That too. And in the meantime, just as Job did, we "cling" to the God we love ever the tighter, and in those horrific moments when it may seem that everything, including us, is falling apart, we TRUST God's character and KNOW that He is God. AND we have our friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ PRAY for us to the God Who is our Comforter and the Lifter of our head, my friend. (((hug)))

Yes, and with the profound comfort and "rest" that comes to you because you are doing as Christ said to do, starting with the Greatest Commandment, thus in keeping with Christ's Words. One doing the Greatest Commandment and facing those circumstances is very likely going to continue this way --

28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Thank you Hal; for that thought and passage.

As other scriptures state: we are to take the blessing's as our's; we children of God; so I'm latching onto that first part of the parable; (as Brinny said in post #5) and clinging to these words of hope from our dear Lord Jesus; as if they are part of a big rock (which they are--Spiritually speaking--Jesus is the word and the rock) so my ship will weather thru this storm of life; by endeavoring to put His words into practice. May He help me and all of us that are following Him to do so; amen.

(((hug)))

Thank you; salty one. I'm clinging to the rock; even tho sometimes I can't see clearly thru the storm; I know (sense without thinking much about it--as in when He said: "be still and know I am God) there is something "unmovable" under all there is.

And I like your thoughts on prayer; and am asking you; my friend; and any others that feel so lead; to please pray for me, my family; and friends; as I'm not giving any secrets away to tell you that part of the post of #3; is for me; but also for a retired pastor friend; off-line; that is 77 yrs young; and is walking thru a valley of great adversity. And you will be in my prayers as well; in Jesus.

I don't know who Greg Laurie is; but I like his thought.:)

 His quote is one of the most profound and most "real" on adversity that i've ever seen. Praying for you, my friend, and your family and friends, and your precious pastor friend, during this harrowing chapter for each of you. Praying that this chapter of trials and a "fiery furnace", so to speak, draws to a close as a new chapter opens for each of you with God's promises un-folding before each of you like a carpet. In the meantime, may He minister to each of you as only He can, heal you every place you hurt, protect and defend you, and be the Lifter of your head. Father may it be so, in Jesus name, amen. (((hug)))

I think so too; we that love the Lord Jesus; will continue because He is "the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:2 NKJV
