  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I guess I was out of the loop yesterday, cause I didn't see any of this.

I hope the movement grows and expands until it's more widely known. I wish I WOULD have seen or heard something yesterday.

We ended slavery in the US some time ago so I don't see the need to think about it. When the cops catch people enslaving people in the US they prosecute them like they should. As for slavery in other countries, other countries have their own citizens who decide which laws they want and don't want. Its not my job to fret over whether they do or don't do what I think they should. I've got enough problems of my own to deal with without worrying about what people in other places are doing.

Even if I did decide it was important to end slavery in Africa or elsewhere, I seriously doubt that my posting about it would convince people in Africa or wherever that slavery is wrong.

I respectfully disagree, Autumnleaf. There is actually a huge sex trafficking problem right here, right now, even here in my own city of Charlotte, NC.

I don't think the thread is about trying to convince you that slavery is wrong, only that we need to raise more awareness of it, because a lot of people still incorrectly consider it something of the past, or something that never happens anymore. It's a huge problem, here in America, and around the world (and many of these victims are shipped from one country to another, so it's an international issue, not just one country apart from another). Sex traffickers are in every major city in America, looking for runaways and homeless youth to enslave; would you be so non-plussed about it if it were your son or daughter who was taken and you had no idea where they were or what had happened?

I'm not being accusatory here, I'm just trying to get you to think about it.

Never heard of this particular movement. However, slavery and sex trafficking does exist in our country. Our church has a ministry dedicated to helping human trafficking. Saying slavery ended years ago in the USA and turning a blind eye towards it is ignorant and shameful.

This thread alone shows why one of the first primary goals is needed - to raise awareness. Too many believe slavery has ended. It's not legal, but it exists below the view of most people.

Awareness won't end slavery, but it's the first step in moving in that direction.

Not a fringe movement either. I first became aware of it over a year ago because Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio and others adopted it at the 2013 Passion conference in Atlanta.

Been my avatar for a year. It's been nice to see the large number of photos on Facebook, etc. Glad it's getting main media attention now.

I've noticed :) I've been meaning to make a thread for some time now.

For anyone that's willing to take the time to learn more.....here is another link for resources (besides the important ones that KEA44 posted above):

Human Trafficking isn't always fitting the same mold---sometimes it's someone like this:

A 33-year-old journalist's dream to cover the Olympics would have been a nightmare had she been a little less careful.
Radio host Brittney Cason she describes how she became a target for human trafficking at the Sochi Olympics under the guise of a reporter job. Cason, who said the case is currently under investigation by the FBI, wrote Monday in an essay for xojane.com how a man who purported to be a "talent acquisitions agent" of a Los Angeles production company almost succeeded in luring her and another female friend travel to Russia and become ensnared in his scheme.

It exists in our country but it is illegal and the police do go after it when they find it, like murder or rape or stealing cable-we could demand an end to those too. There are other places in the world where nobody does anything about it.

I actually donate to a program yearly to buy [sic] slaves and free them.

I have heard of this strategy. I guess I've always wondered, would this contribute to the market for slavery? I mean, the slave trade is actually making money when these programs buy the slaves. I guess I prefer the idea of busting in and freeing them for free. But I know that is not always possible in well-established black markets.

It's so heavily underground....and often the attitudes about it are based on ignorance and poor execution of getting rid of the main root issues (for instance.....criminalizing the victims instead of the leaders of the trafficking rings...which drives it all further underground).

Merely going in and making arrests doesn't solve the problem, either. It goes way deeper than that.

Many do (including government officials).........that's another big part of the problem.

Steve McQueen, director of the Oscar-nominated film 12 Years a Slave, was first given the book that inspired the movie by his wife, who had discovered the almost-forgotten tale of Solomon Northup online. As the director himself noted, “It’s one of those funny things, that sometimes things are just in plain sight.”

In plain sight. The British director’s words are almost overwhelming. There are more slaves today than at any other point in human history, and yet how many of them are hidden in plain sight?

We may watch a movie like 12 Years a Slave and think, “oh, they were so horrible back then!” without recognizing the fact that people can still be horrible today.
