I think it could have been a trilogy. There could actually have been a story better fleshed out with another hour of exposition.
As it was, it satisfactorily did what it needed to do as the culmination of a decade of movies, with a couple of minor disappointments to me (particular what was done with the Hulk and Thor).
It does provide a somewhat fuller experience if one has seen all the previous movies, because there are references to all of them.
I did unconsciously say "....Assemble!" out loud, drawing a sharp look from my wife.
Unfortunately, I think the Russo brothers are going to mar there success with too much post-release editorializing about things the movie doesn't show that should be left unspoken, such as what did Thor know and when did he know it? That's a question better left for fans to debate.
