It's pretty good version 2 is till beta but has a lot of cool features like saving as a pdf so anyone can view it .. well if you got a Acrobat reader

they are working very hard at making it the same, I am sure with a bit of use your wife and kids will get the hang of it.
With the price on Office I think OO is a must
